Sony Alpha 6000 Review

The Sony Alpha 6000 was announced earlier at the start of the year 2014 and I shared about the Alpha 6000 in a post here! From the information and technical specifications inside the press release, it was a pretty impressive mirror-less camera and around the second quarter of 2014, I went down for short hands on photography and handling experience with the Sony Alpha 6000 during an evening session. Thereafter, I shared some initial thoughts here during my short hands on experience with the Sony Alpha 6000.

An opportunity came up to review the Sony Alpha 6000 and I welcomed it with open arms to play, review and add more camera reviews to my photography sharing/social media influencer portfolio. While the review period was a bit shorter than the usual norm, I managed to play, test and review the Sony Alpha 6000 in a few different possible settings and surroundings.

DSC00203

I brought the Sony Alpha 6000 out for daily leisure use, street photography, food and cafes hopping, and also my own personal fun photography project with my recent Star Wars Lego AT-RT exploring different locations in Singapore and Bare Your Sole 2014!

Let me share with you my thoughts on the pros and cons of the Sony Alpha 6000 during my 10 days review –

Pros

  • The Sony Alpha 6000 hybrid autofocus is fast and impressive for a mirror-less interchangeable lens camera.
  • Tested Sony Alpha 6000 with their 11fps capability on a bartender juggling his mixer and alcohol bottle during earlier hands on event prior to the review.
  • Nice Titanium colour giving it a retro feel.
  • Clear and bright electronic viewfinder that is sensitive and changes quickly when changing from LCD view to OLED Tru-Finder view.
  • NFC and Wi-Fi capabilities.
  • 179 Phase-detection AF points / 25 points Contrast-detection AF
  • Fast Hybrid AF (Phase-detection AF/Contrast-detection AF)
  • Not heavy and compact in size.
  • Nice grip at the side.
  • Intuitively placed mode and control dials on top and side of the camera, giving it a DSLR control feel.
  • LCD Screen can tilt up by approximate 90 degrees and tilt down by approximate 45 degrees.
  • The Black and White of the Creative Style is nice and fun to use. The photographers can switch to it and use it for street photography.

Cons

  • Battery life is not ideal; the Sony Alpha 6000 camera body can drain it quite fast.
  • At ISO 25,600, the noise level can be grainy and challenging for photography usage.
  • The Sony Alpha 6000 auto crop some of my photographs that I shot to produce an additional portrait photograph, some were hits while some were misses.
  • While it is a Fast Hybrid AF (phase-detection AF/contrast-detection AF) with 179 points (phase-detection AF) / 25 points (contrast-detection AF), there were a few times when the AF failed me.

Overall, the Sony Alpha 6000 is a lightweight and pretty powerful interchangeable lens mirror-less digital camera. It’s ideal for travel and leisure photographers. With the fast AF for the Sony Alpha 6000 mirror-less camera, it might suit event photographers too. For the purist photographer, the OLED Tru-Finder view is really nice, fast and the rangefinder photographer fan would love it. Since I only got the SELP1650 lens for the review, I wasn’t able to have a feel of the other Sony lenses that could be mounted on the Sony Alpha 6000, the weight factor and output from them. I wished I had more lenses to try out with the Sony Alpha 6000!

DSC00326

The Sony Alpha 6000 might attract photographers who are looking for a mirror-less interchangeable lens camera as their second camera, back up camera or daily leisure camera. Photographers friends that I know who own Sony system are wishing and waiting for more Sony lenses for their E-Mount system and I am looking forward to Sony announcements for their lenses in the near future and I can share with my readers!

– ILCE-6000L (Body + SELP1650 Lens) SGD $1,099 (Black & Titanium)

Bare Your Sole 2014

Walking barefoot for a charitable cause and movement, looking back to 2011, my first time participating in Bare Your Sole. This was my fourth year participating in Bare Your Sole 2014! Bare Your Sole 2014 saw 5000 participants walking barefoot and helping to raise close to $300,000 in the fight against homelessness and poverty. The charity barefoot walk was held at the iconic Gardens By The Bay – Bay East and the 5000 participants were able to enjoy the good weather and sceneries of Marina Bay and Gardens By The Bay during the walk! Here’s a throwback to my Bare Your Sole participation in 2012 and 2013!

IMG_9407

There were a few notable famous participants rallying the enthusiastic crowd and amongst the 5,000 strong troop were Habitat Ambassadors – Television host, film producer and former Nominated Member of Parliament, Eunice Olsen, model, actor and host, Paul Foster and travel host and writer, Anita Kapoor.

It was great to see the number of participants that turned up at Bare Your Sole 2014, they were there for a good cause and enjoyed their time with their friends and loved ones. Some families brought their young children along too and they were just as sporting in walking bare foot too! For those that signed up for the 5km route, they walked towards Marina Barrage and I saw many participants relaxing at Marina Barrage, taking photographs of their barefoot together, group photos and group selfies too!

There was something special during Bare Your Sole 2014 that was brought to my attention by the public relations agency, Porter Novelli, for Bare Your Sole 2014 – Making up the 5,000 participants were over 50 migrant workers from Kim Seng Heng Engineering Construction Pte Ltd, some of which were inspired by personal events back home and wanted to do their part for the Singaporean community.

“Bare Your Sole is an event that my colleagues and myself enjoy and relate to, as some of our families back home do not have a decent place to live in,” said Mr. Raman Ganesan, Safety Coordinator of Kim Seng Heng Engineering Construction Pte Ltd. “I am glad to have had the opportunity to contribute my share to this meaningful event.” At the end of the walk, the participants were treated to a morning of fun and entertainment for the family and friends, with live performances from local entertainment acts along with food and beverage.

It was great to be part of Bare Your Sole 2014, helping to continue spreading the message and awareness! Here’s some of the photographs I took during Bare Your Sole 2014 on Flickr!

Star Wars Lego 75002 AT-RT

The day I started my Star Wars Lego collection, there was no turning back. No, I didn’t go to the Dark Side, I went to the Star Wars Lego side! After adding 75045 Republic AV-7 Anti-Vehicle Cannon and 75044 Droid Tri-Fighter, I added Star Wars Lego 75002 AT-RT and it had become my favourite Star Wars Lego at the moment and I am sure if you have the AT-RT, you will love it too! I have to thank DK for recommending me to get the Star Wars Lego AT-RT!

IMG_9296

It is very nice, not too big and you can bring it out! Master Yoda Lego figurine is really interesting and cute, Master Yoda figurine Lego legs can’t move! The building and construction of the AT-RT wasn’t too difficult and won’t take up too much of your time! For this particular construction and building of the AT-RT, I photographed/documented the process with Canon PowerShot SX700HS and Sony Alpha 6000 camera review units! Do keep a lookout for my upcoming camera reviews!

The Star Wars AT-RT is the short form for All Terrain Recon Transport and more information on the various Star Wars All Terrain vehicles can be found here on Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki! Since the AT-RT is a reconnaissance vehicle, I have some personal plans and ideas to bring the AT-RT out for “reconnaissance exploration photography projects”, inspired by LEGO Travellers and Danbo! Keep a lookout here on my Facebook Page and Instagram for my AT-RT exploration adventures in Singapore and hopefully overseas travel too! You can follow my Star Wars Photography collection here on Flickr!

Walk and explore with my Star Wars Lego AT-RT, bringing you around to many places through their recon projects! Here’s a sneak preview, my Star Wars Lego AT-RT exploring West Coast Park Singapore!

A short photography experience with Sony Alpha 6000

The Sony Alpha 6000 was recently announced in the earlier part of the year and it is an interesting camera packed with pretty powerful features inside the camera. The Sony Alpha 6000 is touted as the fastest interchangeable lens camera with an autofocus of 0.06s.

DSC00075

I was given the opportunity to have a feel and try out the Sony Alpha 6000 on a Wednesday evening, courtesy of Sony Singapore and Waggener Edstrom Worldwide, titled “Challenge yourself to take a great shot with the A6000 from Sony”. While it was a short 2 hours playing experience with the Sony Alpha 6000, I took quite a number of photographs during the short 2 hours experience with the Sony Alpha 6000.

DSC00114

I will be sharing my thoughts and experiences with the Sony Alpha 6000 from my short and fun 2 hours hands-on session. Here are my personal thoughts, views and experiences with the Sony Alpha 6000 –

  • The Sony Alpha 6000 hybrid autofocus is fast and impressive for a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera.
  • Tested Sony Alpha 6000 with their 11fps capability on a bartender juggling his mixer and alcohol bottle.
  • Nice Titanium colour giving it a retro feel.

  • NFC and Wi-Fi capabilities.
  • 179 phase detection AF points.
  • Not heavy and compact in size.
  • Nice grip at the side.
  • Play Memories Camera Apps – interesting to see the various applications available such as Star Trail, Time-lapse. Some of the applications are free and I hope to explore more in the future if the opportunity allows.
  • Intuitively placed mode and control dials on top and side of the camera, giving it a DSLR control feel.
  • The Black and White of the Creative Style is nice and fun to use. The photographers can switch to it and use it for street photography.
  • The Sony Alpha 6000 auto crop some of my photographs that I shot to produce an additional portrait photograph, some were hits while some were misses.

Sony Introduces Alpha 6000

Sony Electronics recently announced new digital imaging products at CP+ Camera and Photo Imaging Show 2014 and one of them was the Sony cid:image004.jpg@01CBAE9C.0564E2A06000 and I would like to share with all my readers here the latest news and information for the Sony Alpha 6000.

Alpha A6000_Lifestyle (2)

The speedy new ILCE-6000 from Sony boasts the quickest AF performance of any interchangeable lens digital camera, snapping subjects into sharp focus in just 0.06 seconds. From spontaneous smiles to towering tennis serves, you’ll capture those fleeting moments that other cameras miss. And thanks to the 24.3 megapixel Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor and BIONZ X processor, every frame is crammed with rich detail and texture. Boosting Sony’s mirrorless line-up, the ILCE-6000 comes in two iconic designs, black and titanium, sure to inspire jealous glances from other photographers. For users who have been thinking about taking advantage of size and weight advantages of a mirrorless camera but don’t want to sacrifice super-quick autofocus, the ILCE-6000 now renders that conversation moot.

Alpha A6000_Black (1)

Even quicker than most professional DSLRs, the phenomenal autofocus speed of the ILCE-6000 is powered by Sony’s advanced Fast Hybrid AF system. A 179-point focal plane phase-detection AF sensor is teamed with high-precision contrast-detection AF. This potent combination delivers the world’s fastest1 AF performance of any interchangeable lens camera, plus continuous shooting at a blazing 11fps with highly accurate autofocus tracking. Nothing gets past the ILCE-6000 – even fast-moving subjects like athletes and acrobatic pets – and the Fast Hybrid AF system is also available in movie mode.  There are plenty more premium features packed into the camera’s compact, purposeful body. Composing scenes is a pleasure through the new clear, bright OLED Tru-Finder™ which consists of four double aspherical lenses. Preview the effects of adjusting focus, exposure and other settings: what you see is exactly what you get.

Alpha A6000_Black (5)

Intuitively-placed mode and control dials on top of the camera allow effortless adjustment of shooting settings while you’re focused on the scene in front of you. A total of 7 customisable buttons – including two dedicated custom buttons – give swift access to any one of 43 assignable functions to satisfy any photo enthusiast. And for extra flexibility in any situation, there’s a built-in flash to brighten up portraits or gloomy indoor shots.  It’s easy to share shots on your mobile: on-board Wi-Fi allows one-touch connection with your Xperia™, NFC-compatible Android smartphones, tablets and VAIO. A single touch also activates Smart Remote Control, linking the camera to fire the shutter from a distance and view photos on your mobile.

Alpha A6000_Silver (4)

The ILCE-6000 interchangeable lens digital camera from Sony will be available in Singapore at all Sony stores and selected authorised dealers from the second quarter of 2014.
