Canon celebrates 14th consecutive year of No. 1 share

Canon Inc recently announced that their company’s interchangeable lens digital cameras have maintained the number 1 share of the global market for 14 consecutive years from 2003 to 2016.

I was one of those that used the Canon EOS 300D, the DSLR camera that made the breakthrough and changes to the DSLR market in 2003. This particular DSLR camera was the start of a very eventful and exciting photography journey for me, starting from 2004 (and still ongoing) when I started using my first DSLR, the Canon EOS 300D for taking photographs and also for my holiday trips to Tokyo, Japan and Penang, Malaysia in 2004.

While I started entering into the world of photography way back in the analogue film SLR days, starting from my primary school days when I played and damaged my father’s SLR camera. I only got into more serious photography starting from 2004. From then on, I never look back, my relationship with Canon DSLRs blossomed with the upgrades from the maiden DSLR, the EOS 300D, followed by -> EOS 30D -> EOS 1D Mark III -> EOS 70D -> EOS 1DX, over the years from 2004 to 2017 (and still counting).

Beside owning the various Canon DSLRs that I wrote down, I also had the honour to be given many opportunities to test and review other Canon DSLR models, sharing the photographs, my reviews, thoughts, views and experiences with them right here on my photography and travel site. There is a particular Canon DSLR model that I really like, yet I didn’t own it, the Canon EOS 5D Mark III. This Canon EOS 5D Mark III allowed me to produce some photography works that were instrumental and significant during my photography adventures.

Over all these years for me, partnering with the various Canon DSLR models, I had learned a lot, grown and improved my photography together with them. At this stage in time, I am now in a new phase of my photography adventure, the start of a new era, striving even higher benchmarks, goals and objectives for myself, in both a personal and professional capacity in my photography.

This is my personal (rather lengthy) Canon DSLRs story, now let me share with you, the Canon Inc story –

Canon Inc. announced that the Company’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and compact-system cameras) have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 14 consecutive years from 2003 to 2016*.

Canon develops the key components featured in its interchangeable-lens cameras— CMOS image sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses— in the pursuit of “Speed, Comfort and High Image Quality, the core concept of the EOS series.” The Company employs these cutting-edge technologies across its entire lineup, from entry-level models that achieve high image quality with easy operation to flagship cameras trusted by professionals, effectively responding to the needs of a wide range of users.

In 2003, the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS 300D Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS Kiss Digital in other regions). This groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, captured the top share of the global market and set the stage for growth in the digital SLR market.

Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of epoch-making products, including the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series which paved the way for digital SLR video recording.

In 2016, Canon introduced an impressive lineup of interchangeable-lens camera products that supported the Company’s achievement of a 14th consecutive year at the top of the global market. In the first quarter of 2016, the Company unveiled the flagship model, the EOS-1D X Mark II, which wields significant clout in the sports photography world thanks to its 14 frame-per-second continuous shooting. This was followed by the EOS 80D for advanced-amateur users, which features excellent still image quality and superb operability when shooting videos. The EOS 5D Mark IV, capable of 4K video, was released in second half of the year. Additionally, the Company’s interchangeable-lens camera lineup was further expanded with the introduction of the high-end EOS M5 compact-system camera in September.

Canon will continue to respond to the needs of its wide range of customers by further bolstering its lineup in 2017. Earlier this February, Canon announced the introduction of n three cameras equipped with the cutting-edge and highly accurate autofocus technology, Dual Pixel CMOS AF: the EOS M6 compact-system camera and the EOS 77D (EOS 9000D in other regions) and EOS 800D (EOS Rebel T7i or EOS Kiss X9i in other regions) digital SLR cameras.

Through the further refining of its diverse imaging technologies based on the Company’s core optical technologies, Canon will further strengthen and expand the EOS lineup through the integration of still image, video and network functionality. Canon will continue striving to create attractive and reliable products aimed at contributing to expanding the culture of photographic and video imaging.

Old Playgrounds Lanterns at Wan Qing Yuan Mid Autumn Festival 2016

My favourite old playgrounds of Singapore, of my childhood days, came back to life in the form of brightly lighted handmade lanterns. It’s more than just nostalgic, it meant a lot to me personally. For those who had been following my photography works, documentation and story telling, old playgrounds had been my personal project for a few years.

When my friends at National Heritage Board informed us of these old playgrounds lanterns were to be part of Wan Qing Yuan Mid Autumn Festival 2016 at Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall, my eyes popped up! I was looking forward to visiting them!

I managed to plan my time and schedule, making a pilgrimage to view my Old Playgrounds lanterns on Tuesday 13th September night. Upon reaching the entrance, I saw the big bright lights from the Old Playgrounds lanterns. They were pretty big and I was able to get up close with them. Immediately, I am able to identify all the Old Playgrounds there, it felt like going back in time to my childhood days again. I saw young children playing with their lanterns around the Old Playgrounds lanterns, they were having so much fun. Sometimes, we adults all have a secret wish to be a young kid again and just have fun like them.

I walked around, soaking in the Mid Autumn Festival with the Old Playgrounds lanterns. It was a bag of mixed emotions, of nostalgia, fun and longing for the free fun childhood running around days at the Old Playgrounds. The Old Playgrounds may not be of greater significance compared to some other aspects of heritage and history. However, the cultural and emotional communal bondings, intangible and tucked inside our hearts and souls, we all might be carrying a fondness for them and a wish to return to the fun days.

The Wan Qing Yuan Mid Autumn Festival 2016 is until 18th September 2016, time to bring your family and children down there for a Mid Autumn Festival outing and a time for family bonding and story telling of your good old childhood days playing at the old playgrounds.

Exploring Dinosaur Playground and Old Dragon Playground

The Old Playgrounds of Singapore, the good old days of our childhood for some of us, probably many of us. I decided to continue and find my Dinosaur Playground in Toa Payoh, one of the few remaining Old Playgrounds on my list. After some research and check, I had an idea where it was located, pretty near to the Grand Old Dame, the Old Dragon Playground of Toa Payoh.

On a Sunday afternoon in October, I had an appointment in Newton, therefore I decided to plan to check out the two playgrounds in Toa Payoh, that was not too far away from Newton. For the Old Dragon Playground, it was more of a revisit and to take a look at how she looks without the old HDB blocks behind her because they were demolished in an en-bloc move. The Old Dragon Playground still looked just as good and grand, without the HDB blocks behind, it kind of makes it empty yet open and wide.

During my short visit, I saw children playing there, running around the Old Dragon Playground and playing with the sand. Although I had my tech gadgets nowadays, I do miss the fun and laughter of my childhood days at the playgrounds in my neighbourhood, where there wasn’t much technology advancements and gadgets in those era.

After taking some photographs of the Old Dragon Playground, soaking in the thoughts, feelings and emotions, I walked across the road from the Old Dragon Playground to Kim Keat Avenue. Soon I found my Dinosaur Playground! I found my big T-Rex Dinosaur there and it kind of looks cute! While it wasn’t exactly the old playground that I grew up playing at, I was having deep thoughts (like a primary school kid during my time) on how I would go around playing at the Dinosaur Playground.

When I finished photographing and documenting the Dinosaur Playground, I turned and walk away. I still have a few more Old Playgrounds to cover and complete my personal project that took me over a few years. While it had been slow and at times inconsistent on my part, I had no regrets and instead had a lot of personal fulfilment, enjoyment and nostalgia.

Time to head for the next Old Playground and tick it off my remaining list.

Keith Crackling Roast – new outlet opened at I12 Katong !

In June 2014, I embarked on two personal photography projects, with the purpose of continuously improving my photography, helping to write and share about fellow friends who are entrepreneurs who are operating in various industries and businesses. I started off with two friends, one was Keith Crackling Roast and the other was in Personal Training/Fitness industry.

For my two friends, I sat down and discuss with them on how I want to go about doing such a joint photography project together. During the process, I learned a lot on brain storming, conceptualising, planning, execution and post project. This wasn’t just for me to learn how to setup lighting and shooting a commercial project. These projects of mine also helped to enhance my own unique style of photojournalism approach and story telling, to showcase their business and the entrepreneur themselves.

Looking back at the journey, photographs and my thoughts/feelings that I wrote in my article post for Keith Crackling Roast in June 2014 and in June 2015, Keith Crackling Roast had opened their second outlet at I12 Katong! Without me knowing it, I grew along with Keith Crackling Roast because the owner Keith is a friend of mine, a fellow entrepreneur too and it’s my personal project that we worked on together.

On 1st June 2015, I was invited to a private opening event for Keith Crackling Roast second outlet at I12 Katong. It was indeed a great honour to be invited there for the private opening at the auspicious hour in the evening with Keith’s family and friends. The highlight for me at the private opening event was to see my photography works that were born during our joint photography project printed and mounted on the wall and board! The feelings, emotions and euphoria, admiring at the photography artworks that I manage to conceptualise and produce, now printed and displayed at Keith Crackling Roast second outlet at I12 Katong!

There were plans to continue to Part 2 of our joint project, we were throwing out some ideas and concepts together and hope to start Part 2 in the near future! I believe that I can improve on our Part 1 of our joint project and bring it to the next level and beyond!

Congratulations to Keith Crackling Roast on the opening of your second outlet at I12 Katong! Wishing you all the best in your business! Huat ah!

Keith is a friend that I knew from alumni networking via Australian Alumni Singapore. He’s from Macquarie University while I am from the University of Queensland and we met during networking functions through Jude, a graduate from Macquarie University. I had a taste of Keith Crackling Roast during my University of Queensland Alumni Association of Singapore (UQAAS) AGM and instead of listening; I was guilty of eating a lot of the absolutely delicious Keith Crackling Roast.

I had a chat with Jude, who helped me to liaise and linked up with Keith. Soon, my plan kicked into action, with Jude helping me as my photographer assistant and my Creative Director (for food styling and arrangement). Even though there were space constraints around the stall, we managed to get the Keith Crackling Roast shoot transforming into a fun and enjoyable photo shoot of the roast, Keith the entrepreneur and their food outlet.
