N.E.mation! 11 Downtown Picnic! Time to cast your votes!

The N.E.mation! 11 Downtown Picnic took place on Saturday 14th January 2017 at The Cathay, External Atrium, Level One, from 1pm to 4pm. This would be my fourth Downtown Picnic attendance and coverage, when it began during N.E.mation! 8 to 9 and then 10. The Downtown Picnic at The Cathay was fun, packed and well received by the teams, schools and their supporters.

I arrived a little bit earlier at the venue before the official start time of 1pm, went around chatting with the students from the five teams that I am ambassador for. Some were having lunch while some were still preparing with the final preparations for the start of the Downtown Picnic at 1pm. Prior to arriving at the N.E.mation! 11 Downtown Picnic, I watched all the Top 10 teams digital animation video clips when they were officially released after 12midnight on 14th January 2017. All the Top 10 digital animation video clips were really good and equally strong in content, style and presentation. The journey to who might be the champion of N.E.mation! 11 is going to be very interesting and exciting with the start of the public voting at N.E.mation! 11 Downtown Picnic.

The Downtown Picnic is also a platform and event ground for the Top 10 teams to showcase their digital animation works to their school, family, friends and supporters, as well as getting support from the public to vote for their digital animation video clip. All these experiences would definitely serve them well in the future, it might be a bit of a daunting experience for them to approach members of the public, sharing their video and asking them to vote. These experiences are priceless and invaluable, they would be able to help them build up their self confidence and public speaking, in school and later in adult life.

At the Downtown Picnic, there were many activities and performances, the Top 10 teams were also invited up on stage to share their digital animation video clip to the participants and visitors at the picnic ground. They also shared about how their video, theme and idea came about, and also their experiences during N.E.mation! 11 production phase. Going up to the stage in the public space, speaking, sharing and pitching for votes are commendable for the young students. The younger students would definitely learn from these experiences while you can spot and sense the maturity of the slightly older students who had prior N.E.mation! experiences in previous/earlier seasons.

Now, this is also the time that I am going to share on the N.E.mation! 11 Top 10 digital animation video clips, watch all the Top 10 teams videos, give them the support and encouragement, cast your votes for your favourite digital animation video clips and you might stand to win attractive prizes too! Visit N.E.mation! website or YouTube channel to view the Top 10 videos by the Top 10 teams of N.E.mation! 11!

NE9_Call For Entry_LowRes1

As Singapore is now taking the steps into her milestone jubilee 50th year in 2015, the theme for N.E.mation! 9 Central Idea – Because We Believe fits perfectly to celebrate Singapore’s 50th year. This special theme for N.E.mation! 9 resonates with me because I have been exploring, documenting and photographing Singapore’s Old Places, history, heritage, culture, conservation and preservation for the past few years. As Singapore approaches our 50th year, it’s an important landmark and milestone for all Singaporeans as we look forward into the future and beyond. The pioneers who built Singapore today believed in the vision to build a strong, secure and cohesive country. Today, as Singapore approaches her 50th birthday, it’s time to reflect values, principles and convictions to continue the growth for the future of Singapore, to shape Singapore into the Home that we want it to be for our future generations.

Not only are there attractive prizes to be won, the learning and journey in N.E.mation! is going to be interesting and exciting, the experiences and journey can even become priceless and invaluable lifetime experiences. Gather your classmates and school mates, time to register for N.E.mation! 9 and give it a go! Good luck to all participants at N.E.mation! 9 and I hope to see you there!

N.E.mation! 8 Watch, Vote and Win Prizes!

This is my third year running that I am involved with the N.E.mation! movement, starting from N.E.mation! 6 to N.E.mation! 8 today. What is N.E.mation! all about? Here’s a recap – N.E.mation! is an annual inter-school animation competition for students from secondary schools, junior colleges and centralised institute(s) to express their thoughts on Total Defence (TD). More than 9,500 students have participated in N.E.mation! since its inauguration in 2007. The theme for N.E.mation! 8 is “Because You Played A Part” and all of you can play a part in the N.E.mation! 8 adventure too, just by Watching, Voting and you can stand to win attractive prizes!

I was happy and honoured to be invited and be part of N.E.mation! 8 journey, starting with “Are You Ready to Kick Start?“, a rally call to students out there to step forward and be a part of N.E.mation! 8. I visited the top 10 teams of N.E.mation! 8, with a behind the scenes and the making of adventures during their intensive preparation of their animation clip. The experience was very fun, speaking to all the 10 teams of N.E.mation! 8, listening to their stories and experiences, understanding more about their ideas and choice of animation style. I think that when each team had to present, share and chatted with John and myself during the visit, it also helped them prepare for their Downtown Picnic event!

On the 18th January 2014, N.E.mation! organised a Downtown Picnic at The Plaza, National Library Building. The top 10 teams of N.E.mation! 8 were there to introduce themselves to the public and supporters, sharing their stories, experiences and to showcase their final product, the animation clip from their 3 weeks of intensive preparation! Joining me at the N.E.mation! 8 Downtown Picnic were fellow social media friends, DK, Sue, Andy and John who also came down to support the N.E.mation! 8 adventures! I took the time to revisit the top 10 teams again and it was nice chatting with them again especially those that still remembered me from my visit during their 3 weeks of intense preparation!

For the past two seasons N.E.mation! 6 and 7 (and including this season, N.E.mation! 8), I witnessed and experienced first hand the quality and talents of the young and future generations of Singapore. From having zero experience in animation, the final products, their animation clips produced by the students, were really impressive and heartwarming. Likewise, N.E.mation! 8 promises to be just as exciting and when you start to watch all the 10 animation clips, you might have a hard time (which s a good problem to have!) to vote for your favourite 3 clips! There are exciting prizes to be won and let me share with you the information and steps for you to vote and what are the exciting prizes to be won! Drop by N.E.mation! website  and my previous post to check out the Top 10 Teams and their impressive animation clips! Remember to vote after watching all the Top 10 animation clips! Voting ends on 15th February 2014!

To all the Top 10 Teams of N.E.mation! 8, great job and well done! Everyone of you that participated in the N.E.mation! 8 journey is a winner! Good luck and all the best in your future endeavours!

A Visit to N.E.mation! 8 – The Making of Adventures

The Final Top 10 teams, in their final 3 weeks of intense preparation to produce their animation clip for N.E.mation! 8 theme – “Because You Played A Part”. The N.Emation! Competition is an annual inter-school competition animation competition for students from secondary schools, junior colleges and centralized institute(s) to express their thoughts on Total Defence. The theme this year is “30 Years of Total Defence: Because You Played A Part”, Singapore today, we enjoyed stability, security, peace and prosperity. All these will not be possible without everyone’s effort that played a part in building up our nation, Singapore, our home today! We went through bad times and good times and every one of us played a part to overcome challenges and celebrate our success together with every one of us here.

The N.E.mation! Journey starts from the Top 100 teams that were shortlisted for 1-week selection, followed by the 1st cut in a 1 week selection, down to the Top 40 teams, thereafter a 2nd cut in a 1 week selection, down to the Top 20 teams and finally, the final cut to the Top 10 teams. The Top 10 teams will go through a 3 weeks production to produce their animations.

I was invited down to visit the Top 10 teams of N.E.mation! 8 during their 2nd week to have a look behind the scenes of the Top 10 teams in their making of adventures! It was a very fun time that I spent there chatting with the young students from the various schools, learning more about their animation themes, what techniques they were using, their progress so far in their 3 weeks production. All the Teams are special and unique in their own ways and ideas; you can spot their creativity, talents and teamwork inside them, mentored by the instructors of Animagine. The N.E.mation! 8 this time promises to be 10 different unique animation productions and I am looking forward to viewing the animation productions of the Top 10 teams when they finally complete and submit it!

When I was chatting to the young boys and girls from the Top 10 teams of N.E.mation! 8, they don’t have prior knowledge or experience in animation or using animation production software. You will be amazed when you see how much they can produce and showcase from their 3 weeks of animation production. Having been involved and being part of N.E.mation! for the past 2 series, I am confident they N.E.mation! 8 is going to bring the level of animation production to greater heights! Each team has a unique storyline to share and tell, I encourage every one of you to Play A Part too! Visit each Team from the Top 10 teams of N.E.mation! 8, read their stories and adventures, encourage them to keep on preserving and get ready to view their animation productions! Remember to share about the N.E.mation! 8 Top 10 teams happenings, news and adventures with your family, loved ones and friends too!

N.E.mation!8 – Are You Ready to Kick-Start?

The 8th edition of N.E.mation!8 is back and ready to kick start a brand new year with a brand new theme! This will be my third year being involved in N.E.mation! I was part of the N.E.mation! journey from N.E.mation! 6 and this season is N.E.mation! 8, and I am very happy to be part of this journey to share and encourage everybody to be part of the N.E.mation! adventure and journey. N.E.mation! 8 is now open for entry! It’s time to share this with your friends, loved ones and family about N.E.mation! 8. When I was part of N.E.mation! 6 and N.E.mation! 7, the talents and creativity by our students were of the highest level and it was very heart warming and touching too! I am an avid supporter of the N.E.mation! journey and I strongly encourage all of you to be part of the N.E.mation! journey, either as a participant or as a supporter (like me) !!NE8LOGO_FA

Some of you may ask, what is N.E.mation! all about? N.E.mation! is a digital animation competition organised by Nexus for youths to express their thoughts on Total Defence. Into its eighth season this year, the competition has proven highly successful, with more than 9,900 students participating since its inception in 2007. With training and guidance, students with no prior experience in animation have been able to produce clips of broadcast quality to screen on free-to-air television. Some of these clips were even selected for international animation festivals and won several awards.

The theme for N.E.mation! 8 is

“Because You Played A Part”

30 years of security and stability as a nation was built upon everyone’s efforts. We stood with each other through the good times and bad, overcoming challenges and celebrating our successes. We are able to enjoy what we have in Singapore today because each of us has played a part, in building this nation, our home.”

This year’s N.E.mation! 8 theme resonates with me a lot, everybody plays a part in Total Defence, no matter who you are. We all have a part to play, no matter how big or small our part is.

This year, students are asked to use their creativity to produce storylines centred on the theme of “Because You Played A Part”. The animation clips produced by the top 10 finalist teams will be judged by a panel comprising industry professionals such as Melvin Tan (Senior Animator, Blue Sky Studios). In addition, the public can vote for their three favourite clips come January 2014 at www.nemation.sg, Facebook or via SMS. The winning team will win a coveted trip to visit a renowned animation studio in the USA!
