DBS Marina Regatta 2016

The DBS Marina Regatta 2016 took place over two weekends recently, on the 28th & 29th May and 4th & 5th June 2016. A water sports competition along with land based activities for supporters and visitors, it was a carnival for everybody to come down and enjoy the dragon boating action, fun leisure activities, food, festivities, music and the one and only pop-up urban beach.

B47X0925

On the Marina Bay waters, teams battle out on their dragon boats from the morning till the evening, a showcase of teamwork, determination, speed, power and adrenaline. They dragon boat paddlers were great to watch, some of the competitions faced some pretty close fight all the way to the finishing line, perfect for a finishing line photo opportunity.

B47X0747

The first weekend was the 200m race distance while the second weekend was the 500m race distance. Two different race distances, teams applied different tactics to compete in their respective race distances. The 500m race distance were more interesting to watch especially when the paddlers rev up their tempo, speed, pace and power around the last 200m mark to the finishing line, giving spectators lots to watch and cheer about from the sides of The Promontory at Marina Bay.

B47X0372

On the shore of The Promontory at Marina Bay, where the DBS Marina Regatta carnival village was located, packed with many fun leisure activities for everybody to come down and enjoy. There was the pop-up urban beach, 3,100sqm with a 375sqm pool. Visitors were able to enjoy stand-up paddling, stand-up yoga at the pop-up pool. There were also deck chairs, hammocks, palm trees, pop-up beach bar, concert stage and atmospheric night lighting.

B47X0597

At DBS Marina Regatta 2016, there was an appearance by Southeast Asia tallest inflatable slide, at a height of 16m with the total slide height of over 15m. Participants slide down at angle of 45 degrees and this was popular with the visitors to DBS Marina Regatta 2016. The fee was SGD $10 for five rides and all the proceeds were donated to SPD, a non-profit organisation that helps people with disabilities develop their potential to the fullest so that they can be self-reliant and independent.

B47X0510

DBS Marina Regatta 2016 also saw the largest collective of home-grown designers, musicians and chefs gathering at Marina Bay. Curated by The Local People, market specialists and space activators, the regatta’s art market Shop House featured some of the most up-and-coming names in the industry, to be part of the festivities and fun at DBS Marina Regatta 2016. Food is a very important part of our life here in Singapore and there were various mouth watering food options at the food village Chow House.

A good mix of water sports action and community activities at DBS Marina Regatta 2016, their 5th year in action. It had grown over the years and looking forward to their 6th year and beyond.

i Light Marina Bay 2016

The i light festival is back at Marina Bay Singapore! This bright, colourful, interesting and unique light artwork displays festival is back for their 4th edition in Singapore, starting on 4th March 2016 to 27th March 2016. Looking back into my photography archives on Flickr, the inaugural i light marina bay festival was held in 2010, followed by 2012 and 2014. Over the previous three editions, we were able to witness many unique, interesting and colourful light artwork displays at Marina Bay Singapore. With many light artwork installations over the three editions and now 4th edition, I am always amazed by the lights, designs and ideas.

IMG_1761

i Light Marina Bay is Asia’s leading sustainable light art festival, this year’s 2016 theme is “In Praise of Shadows” with 25 innovative and environmentally friendly light artwork installations installed and showcased around the Marina Bay area. For i Light Marina Bay 2016, the event has become bigger with more programs and festivities happening in the vincinity of Marina Bay, outdoor performances, workshops and outdoor dining options.

I started my i Light Marina Bay 2016 adventure from the Esplanade, walking down towards The Float @ Marina Bay, crossing the Helix Bridge to Art Science Museum, continuing towards Waterfront Promenade and Marina Bay City Gallery. Thereafter, I continued towards the Promontory @ Marina Bay before ending my adventure outside Fullerton Bay Hotel. It was a bit of a fast walk for me, to document, cover and photograph all 25 light artwork installations at i Light Marina Bay 2016 within a night from around 8pm to 11pm. However, I am still planning to go back and revisit some of the light artwork installations again, especially those that I want to photograph more in-depth, from a few different perspectives and angles. After that, I would share and upload them into my i Light Marina Bay 2016 photo collection on Flickr.

Allow me to bring you back in time to the first three editions of i Light Marina Bay before experiencing the 4th edition! Here’s my i Light Marina Bay photography collection on Flickr

From the 25 light artwork installations, there are a few of them that caught my eye and attention. Personally, here are some of my favourite light artwork installations from i Light Marina Bay 2016 –

– What A Loving Beautiful World – Art Science Museum by teamLab (Japan)

IMG_1576

– Lightscape Pavilion by MisoSoupDesign (Taiwan)

IMG_1839

– Marine Constellations by Laughing Stars (Japan) and Lumen Artistry (Singapore)

Each and everyone of the 25 artists and their light artwork installations deserve recognition and special mention for their showcase at i Light Marina Bay 2016. Do check out the 25 artists bio and light artwork installations description on the website! This would be helpful to learn more about the respective artist and their inspiration, ideas and design behind their light artwork!

I had always been amazed, fascinated and attracted by the colourful bright lights from i Light Marina Bay festivals. DBS Marina Regatta 2015 – 6th and 7th June

The first weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015 finished on a high and it was carried along into the second weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015 on the 6th and 7th June. Most of the shore activities at The Promontory @ Marina Bay continued into the second weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015. On the waters of Marina Bay, it was the water sports weekend – the Best of Southeast Asia Sports with DBS Marina Regatta and SEA Games Traditional Boat (Dragon Boat) Races action on the 6th and 7th June 2015.

IMG_5322

For the DBS Marina Regatta 2015, the races that were held were

  • DBS Singapore Premier Mixed (22 crew)
  • DBS Tertiary Mixed (12 crew)
  • DBS Corporate Mixed (12 crew)

For the 28th SEA Games 2015, the races that were held were

  • 6 crew, 200m (Men’s and Women’s) World’s First
  • 6 crew 500m (Men’s and Women’s) World’s First
  • 12 crew 200m (Men’s and Women’s)
  • 12 crew 500m (Men’s and Women’s)

With the addition of SEA Games Traditional Boat Races at the DBS Marina Regatta, there were less races compared to the first weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015. Lesser races doesn’t mean it was less exciting, instead, it was a great spectacle for the spectators sitting around the Marina Bay area watching and supporting the Dragon Boat Paddlers in action.

2T2J6387

During the SEA Games Traditional Boat Races, the supporters came out in force to cheer for their fellow country people participating and competing in the Dragon Boat racing. They were vocal and expressive and some were colourful in their attire (donning national colours)! I can hear the spectators and supporters cheering from across the waters, near the Marina Bay City Gallery and Marina Bay Sands when I was photographing the Dragon Boat paddlers from The Promontory @ Marina Bay!

2T2J6482

I rotated around various locations and sometimes stationed myself at the opposite side from The Promontory @ Marina Bay, the steps/seats between Marina Bay Sands and Marina Bay City Gallery, sitting as close to the waters of Marina Bay. With my Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 lens, I focus and seek out to find the DBS Marina Regatta paddlers and also the SEA Games paddlers at the pontoon/jetty, the embarkation and disembarkation point for the Dragon Boats. The emotions and facial expressions of the SEA Games paddlers were priceless and I was happy that I photographed my Team Singapore paddlers out there on the waters of Marina Bay, a small contribution of my photographs to Team Singapore in action at SEA Games 2015!

2T2J6278

On Sunday 7th June 2015 morning, the weather wasn’t good and I was hoping (and everybody else there too!) that it doesn’t affect the entire Sunday’s race schedule for both DBS Marina Regatta and SEA Games events. The weather slowly changed for the better towards the afternoon and by the late afternoon, the weather around Marina Bay was beautiful with blue sky and white clouds!

2T2J6598

Mother Nature blessed the DBS Marina Regatta 2015 and SEA Games 2015 races with a gorgeous rainbow across the horizon in the finale races for both DBS Marina Regatta and SEA Games. I was very happy that I managed to capture it down in memory and share this lovely blessing around. An omen, a blessing, a wonderful and beautiful natural phenomena. This rainbow inspired me to write a dedicated story – the rainbow emerging to the DBS Asia Dragons when they crossed the finishing line in first position. Indeed, the symbolism of a rainbow “The end of the Rainbow signifies a Pot of Gold and the magic that surrounds your dreams coming true”

2T2J5831

The Best of Southeast Asia Sports on 6th and 7th June 2015 – DBS Marina Regatta 2015 and SEA Games 2015 Traditional Boat Races were brought to a close with a spectacular grand finale. It had been two exciting weekends for me, covering, photographing and sharing DBS Marina Regatta 2015 and also covering the SEA Games 2015 Traditional Boat Races!

2T2J6025

Igniting Possibilities, Igniting The Bay for everyone, the paddlers, the people behind the scenes, the supporters. The 2015 edition is the biggest DBS Marina Regatta till date and the second weekend of 6th and 7th June, comprising of both the DBS Marina Regatta 2015 and SEA Games 2015 Traditional Boat Races ignites the Marina Bay, celebrating the win, the happiness, friendships, community and sea sports extravaganza in the heart of Marina Bay!

DBS Marina Regatta 2015 – 30th and 31st May

In its fourth edition, Singapore’s biggest water sports festival, the DBS Marina Regatta returned to Marina Bay Singapore, brining great action and fun on and off the waters of Marina Bay. Covering over three weekends from 30th to 31st May, 6th to 7th June and 13th to 14th June 2015. In conjunction with the 28th SEA Games 2015 held in Singapore from 5th to 16th June, Traditional Boat (Dragon Boat) Races were held together with DBS Marina Regatta on 6th and 7th June and Sailing Races was held on 13th and 14th June 2015.

IMG_5062

For DBS Marina Regatta 2015, there were close to 180 teams and 2,000 athletes participating in this year’s Dragon Boating event! There were also a growing number of female Dragon Boaters – close to 20% more than the previous year. This was indeed the biggest water sports festival in Singapore and it’s growing!

2T2J5381

Let me bring you through my eyes, heart, stories and photographs of the first weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015, on the 30th and 31st May. This was my third year covering DBS Marina Regatta, I am quite familiar with the Dragon Boat Races and schedules. On Saturday 30th May, it was the 200m race distance and on Sunday 31st May, it was the 500m race distance.

2T2J4966

The race categories were as follows:

  • DBS Singapore Premier Open (22 crew)
  • DBS Singapore Premier Women (12 crew)
  • DBS Tertiary Open (22 crew)
  • DBS Tertiary Women (12 crew)
  • DBS Corporate Open (12 crew)
  • DBS Corporate Women (12 crew)

There were lots of Dragon Boating action on the waters of Marina Bay whereby spectators can enjoy watching them in action at The Promontory @ Marina Bay, Marina Bay City Gallery area and Fullerton area. For this year, besides my fast action capture of fast and furious Dragon Boating paddling, I decided to go more into the “behind the scenes” part of Dragon Boating, the preparation, the emotions and camederie of the paddlers. The experiences were pretty amazing and these are the type of the other story of sports photography that we sports photographers love to capture and share. Through my photographs, I hope that I am to share more on the scenes behind the scenes.

IMG_4850

Off the waters, on the ground level, DBS Marina Regatta 2015 transformed The Promontory @ Marina Bay into a big sports, recreational and leisure sports carnival village, there is something for everybody who is at DBS Marina Regatta 2015. There were many different events and activities happening during DBS Marina Regatta 2015, some of the events and activities that I manage to cover and photographed were

  • DBS Art Park ~ There were eight up and coming artists aged between 18-35 from NOISE working on four giant 2m by 2m art cubes.
  • Living Art ~ The re-enactment of a painting, “Life by the River” by renowned Singaporean artist Liu Kang.
  • Extreme Sports Arena ~ Rock climbing and Zipline (a.k.a Flying Fox)
  • DBS Food Village by Savour ~ Delicious food galore.

IMG_5018

IMG_4809

I rotated myself around the various locations of DBS Marina Regatta 2015, photographing and documenting sports action on the waters, behind the scenes of the Dragon Boat, waiting, preparation, supporting, the euphoria and emotions. Towards the later part of the afternoons on both 30th and 31st, these were the time for the finale, the various finals for the 200m (30th May) and 500m (31st May). That’s also where I had the enjoyment and adrenaline rush of photographing the fast sychronised Dragon Boat paddling action on the waters of Marina Bay from the The Promontory @ Marina Bay.

2T2J4484

Over the first weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015 on 30th and 31st May, there were great action on the waters and off the waters, on the ground level. Rounding up my first weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015, I was looking forward to the second weekend with the 28th SEA Games Traditional Boat (Dragon Boat) Races in action together along with DBS Marina Regatta 2015!

New Year Eve Countdown 2014 Fireworks!

New Year Eve Countdown 2014, a time to say goodbye to the Year 2013 and welcome the New Year 2014 with a bright big bang of fireworks at the Marina Bay area! Shooting fireworks is like a pilgrimage for me since I love fireworks! I had been consistently shooting fireworks since 2007, check out my fireworks collection on Flickr!

2T2J8033Heading down to Marina Bay Sands with DK, our initial plan was the Art Science Museum area, however, we were forced to change our locations after we arrived and saw the crowds sitting down and it was getting very crowded without much moving space. Therefore, we headed downwards along the Marina Bay Sands promenade, towards Marina Bay City Gallery, we spotted Renhao and decided to squeeze together with him at his location!

DSC01375

With my fireworks shooting experience, I was able to squeeze 3 tripods quite closely together and everyone of us still have space to watch and capture the fireworks! After the setup, it was a long wait for around 2.5 hours, we just chit chat and relax while waiting. During the waiting time, I took out the Sony RX100ii review unit and started snapping fun shots of the crowds, testing the high ISO and aperture wide open capabilities and output! The crowds were a lot bigger this year, New Year Eve Countdown Fireworks used to have photographers lining their tripods side by side, however, there weren’t many tripods in our area.

DSC01391

DSC01396

When the time reaches 1st January 2014 at 0000 hours, the fireworks started! It was a fun first 2 minutes before the North-East to South-West wind started blowing the smoke from the fireworks into our direction and as the fireworks continued firing away, the smoke started to accumulate and engulfed the Marina Bay area from our view. It was just a giant cloud of smoke! While we can’t really take any more photographs of the fireworks after that, we just relaxed and enjoyed our evening, wishing friends Happy New Year! While the New Year Eve Countdown 2014 Fireworks wasn’t as ideal as we all would like, we still had fun in our own ways there! Always good to meet and chat with fellow photographer friends!

2T2J8029

2T2J8070

Today is the first day of the New Year 2014, I would like to wish all of you a Happy New Year 2014! Take more photographs and share! To all my friends and readers, thank you very much for your support and following! I look forward to documenting, photographing, writing and sharing more stories and events in the Year 2014!

Elephant Parade Photography Adventure @ Marina Bay

A morning photography adventure, to capture colourful elephants around the Marina Bay area, don’t worry, they are not the real life mammal elephants, instead, they are the elephant statues, with each and every elephant uniquely coloured and painted by an individual artist. The Elephant Parade is the world’s largest open air art exhibition of decorated elephant statues, its purpose is to seek and attract public awareness and support for Asian elephant conservation. More information on how the Elephant Parade started can be found here!

The Elephant Parade Singapore 2011 is visiting Singapore from 11th November 2011 to 11th January 2012, presented by ABN AMRO Private Banking and there are 162 uniquely designed and colourful elephant statues, by local and international artistes around Singapore. On a Sunday morning, 18th December 2011, there was an Elephant Parade Photography Adventure, organized by: Marina Bay Singapore/Urban Redevelopment Authority and supported by: Elephant Parade Singapore, Asian Civilisations Museum, The Fullerton Hotel. It was great fun photographing the Elephant Parade, knowing more about the Elephant cause and saving Elephants movement, the honour of meeting some of the artists along the photography adventure, listening to their sharing on how their unique designs came about and their inspirations behind their drawings and designs on the elephant statutes.

This was also a great time to network and meet old friends and make new friends, from the photography circle to the social media/blogging/twitter circle. Starting from One Raffles Quay South Tower, walking towards Marina Promontory, Marina Bay City Gallery, Marina Bay Sands, Esplanade, Raffles Place MRT, Asian Civilisations Museum and finally Fullerton Hotel. The morning rain showered us twice, however, it didn’t fail to dampen any of the photographers spirits! We just rush and find shelter that’s all and wait for the rain to stop!

At the end point of the photography adventure, we were kindly hosted by Fullerton Hotel with light refreshments, relaxing and having fun with the quiz, hosted by Juliana Tan of Marina Bay Division, who was also the main organiser behind the Elephant Parade Photography Adventure at Marina Bay.

There are still more Elephant Statues around the island of Singapore for me to capture, I would try to capture all 162 of them before the exhibition tours another country!

Let’s all help to spread the cause, let’s save the Elephants !
