Updates and changes to my photography sites

The time is now, it had been brewing behind the scenes for some time since 2016. There were times when I looked back and reflected on myself, whether things could have been done faster. In life, sometimes, many things don’t go according to plan.

Sometimes, the people around you understand or make a point to seek first and understand, sometimes, there are also people around you that doesn’t want to understand and know what were the circumstances and situations.

As I took the first step into opening my own small business in photography on the 1st day of 2017, there were a lot of things behind the scenes to get things up and running for my small photography business. From setting up a new photography portfolio website, to restructuring and realignment of my other photography sites. The economic conditions are slow and very challenging for year 2017 and 2018. Taking the first step into operating a small business, is a huge leap of faith and courage. I am and I have to work a lot extra harder and smarter, taking on 2 more jobs (helping my friends business in legal services and forex/stocks trading) beside growing and building up my small photography business.

First and foremost, let me introduce to you the updates and changes below:

New photography portfolio website using Format platform – http://www.tghphotography.com

First and foremost, I thought I had a photography portfolio. Yes and No.

A fellow photographer friend commented that my photography and travel interest site (probably in 2015) was messy and people can’t see my true portfolio. He was spot on and I took note of that, without going full steam ahead into making the changes, that was before some things happened in 2016.

In 2016, after personal setbacks and fell right into the bottom of a well. I started to plan and make changes. While picking myself up, licking my wounds and handling personal losses to my loved one and 2 close friends in year 2016.

The process was much slower than I what planned and wanted it to be. Finally, I pieced all my jigsaw puzzles and planning together, giving rise to my new photography portfolio.

Photography and travel interest site – http://www.photojournalist-tgh.tv

This website used to double up as my portfolio, with more than 10 years of photography and travel content (since 2006). It had accumulated a pretty rich amount of photography and travel content. With the establishment of my new photography portfolio, this would be relived of official photography portfolio duties.

She will continue to serve in her capacity as a photography and travel interest / social media / blogging website, my digital marketing, social media and blogging arm for my photography and travel.

Hosting/sharing of photographs in photography/social media communities

~ 500px – https://500px.com/tangenghui

~ Flickr – https://www.flickr.com/photos/tangenghui

These two photography communities are where I have uploaded and shared my photographs from my past years of photography adventures. These two communities are closely linked to my photography and travel interest site, whereby I wrote about the events that I attended, camera reviews, travel etc and visitors can visit Flickr or 500px to view more of the photographs that I took.

With the establishment of my new photography portfolio, my 500px and Flickr would be restructured and realigned them to be secondary photography portfolios.

There might be people who question the need for multiple photography sites to host and showcase my photography works. They each have their goals, objectives and directions in terms of my outreach, engagement and sharing of photographs. Having a presence in the two different photography communities help to expand and diversify my photography presence, outreach and branding.

Facebook Page – https://www.facebook.com/TanGengHuiPhotography

My Facebook page will remain status quo, no major changes to its direction and usage. This is part of my social media outreach, digital engagement, marketing and publicity platform for my family, relatives, friends, clients and supporters on Facebook.

This Facebook page is not just about sharing my photography works, it’s also a sharing platform for photography tips, news, interesting events taking place and my travel segment as well, from travel news, travel tips and travel events.

Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/tangenghui

My Instagram currently is a personal Instagram account, therefore, it’s not specially and specifically curated photography portfolio. This is a pretty carefree Instagram account, not bounded by too many of my own rules and regulations.

I might setup another Instagram account, purely for photography portfolio purposes. Until this takes place, my current Instagram account would take on the role on the Instagram platform, as part of my social media outreach, digital engagement, marketing and publicity platform for my family, relatives, friends, clients and supporters.

Final closing and personal thoughts

A new established photography portfolio, along with a strategic restructuring and realignment of my other photography sites, all these new changes and movements allowed me to streamline and manage my business, marketing and social media outreach.

Nothing in life is perfect, we just have to learn, grow and pick ourselves up from our mistakes and failures. At this juncture in time, all of the above would serve me well in running my photography business and growth in the near future.

Today, reaching this milestone, opening up this new journey, the route leading me towards this post today, was never straightforward and smooth going as I thought it would be. The setbacks in year 2016 spurred me to create and carve my own future. Being stuck at the bottom of the well, climbing my way up and out of it, this was another huge learning and growing curve in my life, to pick myself up from all the hurt, damage, anger, disappointment, lost of confidence and self belief.

Some said, I am slow in doing all these things together. True, no doubt about that and I do not deny that point. I do things a bit slower than others because I am more prudent, plan and strategise further ahead. How many people really knew about the recovery curve that I went through?

Most people don’t want to know the things behind the scenes, the “blood, sweat and tears”, they only see the end results and money, this is the capitalist economy that we live in.

Everything above is a huge leap of faith, it’s a new hope. No matter how much or how detailed planning in life that a person can do, in whatever areas they take on, there are no guarantees in life, I used to learn that there are only 2 guarantees in life, they are death and taxes, now make it 3 ~ Change is the 3rd guarantee in life.

This new journey actually started on 1st January 2017, it’s only with the launch of my new photography portfolio that I can write all my plans, happenings and thoughts here.

I know this is quite a bit of lengthy read, thank you very much from the bottom of my heart, for taking your precious time to read (when most people are not reading much) and for your continuous support, if you have read till the last line here.

National Gallery Singapore

On Tuesday 24th November 2015, this marked a significant, important and official day that the National Gallery Singapore re-opened her doors to the public after a period of renovation. I looked back at my archives and found an article that I wrote in 2010, titled “National Art Gallery Singapore Open House” and I still have a collection of photographs that I took of the former Supreme Court and City Hall (inside my backup portable hard disk) before she closed for the massive renovations and the metamorphosis into the National Gallery Singapore today.

IMG_2317

There would be two weeks of festivities from 24th November to 6th December 2015 and there is something for everybody to visit the National Gallery Singapore and be a part of this milestone in Singapore’s history. There are major activities and events during the two weeks, Art Carnival, Let’s Talk About Art, Follow Your Bliss, Film and Music & Dance – Step Into The Beat. More information can be found on the National Gallery Singapore website and this would allow you to plan your visit to the National Gallery Singapore.

IMG_2322

Prior to the official opening day on the 24th November 2015, I was honoured to be given the opportunity to tour the National Gallery Singapore along with the various Instagram community groups in Singapore for the Gallery Insta-Meet on Saturday 14th November afternoon. While I shared some snippets of the National Gallery Singapore on my Instagram, today, on the 24th November 2015, along with the official day that the National Gallery Singapore is re-opened. I would now share more of my photographs and stories from my visit during the Gallery Insta-Meet.

IMG_2245

It was really great to visit the two iconic national monuments, the former Supreme Court and City Hall again, now combined and joined together to form the National Gallery Singapore. There are a number of art galleries inside the National Gallery Singapore and I strongly encourage you to book your tickets to visit the various grand art galleries inside there. Most of the heritage, design, furniture and architecture were preserved to her heyday when the former Supreme Court and City Hall played major roles in Singapore’s colonial history and early independence years.

IMG_2264

During my Gallery Insta-Meet event, I explored new places that I never thought that I am able to see up close, the former Supreme Court Terrace whereby I was able to see the dome and inside the Rotunda. A new, interesting and unique design would be the Link Bridges: Upper Link and Lower Link that joined the City Hall and former Supreme Court together. The sheltered walkway space where the Link Bridges are located, is something new with the area enclosed by a metal and glass canopy, supported by tree-like columns, turning it into a civic plaza in the sky with the connection of the two National Monuments.

IMG_2284

While my photography collection from my Gallery Insta-Meet can bring you into a visual tour of the National Gallery Singapore, nothing beats going down to the real destination, the National Gallery Singapore, to visit and tour the two National Monuments, the various art galleries, getting more connected and in touch with Singapore’s history, heritage, conservation and preservation.

National Gallery Singapore is once again open to the public, let’s all visit and welcome the National Gallery Singapore, a new visual arts institution, into our network of museums in Singapore.

DBS Marina Regatta 2014

DBS Marina Regatta 2014, Singapore’s Biggest Water Sports Festival was held recently at the Marina Bay area on 17th and 18th May. This wasn’t just a water sports festival with competitive Dragon Boating paddling actions; there were lots of fun and activities on the land too! Dragon Boating action was on both days, 17th and 18th May, with the 200m races on Saturday 17th and 500m races on 18th May. The weather was good on Saturday 17th and there were pretty good competitive Dragon Boating action on the water for all spectators around the Marina Bay area. The action was fast and intense, with many supporters cheering on their teammates from the sidelines of the Promontory at Marina Bay.

However, the weather on Sunday, 18th May, was bad, with heavy thunderstorm and downpour. In lieu of the safety for the Dragon Boat paddlers and events ground staff, the Dragon Boat races were not able to go ahead and many have to be cancelled due to safety considerations from the bad weather conditions and lightning risks. While there will be disappointments from the competitors/participants, they will understand that safety for all competitors/participants were the utmost priority and cannot be compromised. The weather on Sunday cleared up around the late afternoon and there were 5 races that could go ahead in the early evening. The last 5 Dragon Boat races gave the grand finale to the finishing line of DBS Marina Regatta 2014!

There were an array of fun and festivities on the land, around the DBS Marina Regatta events/carnival village, for the participants and visitors to enjoy and have fun in! There was something for everybody there, from the young to the adults! There were the Asia Cosplay Meet, Asian Food Festival, Asian Drum Challenge, DBS Movies By The Bay, Play Zone, DBS Cycle By The Bay, and Photo Booth and Merchandise booth to buy gifts! The various different land activities brought about added fun and festivities to the waters sports festival! Here is my photography coverage collection of DBS Marina Regatta 2014 on Flickr!

Selfies for good was launched for DBS Marina Regatta 2014, a movement to celebrate the enthusiasm of the participants and visitors to DBS Marina Regatta who took many photographs (and selfies) and sharing it on social media platforms such as Instagram. For every selfie taken at DBS Marina Regatta 2014, a free meal will be pledged to a primary school student supported by the Student Advisory Centre. This was a great and noble initiative!

With the conclusion of the final 2 Dragon Boat races in the evening and as the sun sets down on a Sunday evening, DBS Marina Regatta 2014 came to a close with an electronic kites display and a fireworks display at Marina Bay. Till we meet again next year for DBS Marina Regatta 2015!

LG G2 Mobile Photography Workshop with Aik Beng Chia

Mobile Phone Photography, a recent rise and phenomenon, with the availability and rapid expansion of the smartphone markets, camera, photography apps and social media connectivity that makes mobile phone photography easy to use, upload and share with friends and followers around the world. I had been an avid user in mobile phone photography, using my iPhone 3, 4 and 5 with my Instagram camera application and Here’s my Instagram account! While I am using iPhone for my mobile phone/street photography, there are other smartphone brands and models that have great capabilities too, for mobile phone and street photography!

IMG_6372

There was a LG G2 Mobile Photography Workshop with Aik Beng Chia, one of my photographer friends that I know personally, worked with him before during a recent photography assignment together with a few other photographers. I was there to try out the LG G2 smartphone and also to support Aik Beng too! The LG G2 smartphone is is the latest flagship smartphone by LG Electronics, that pushes boundaries, setting a new standard in the smartphone industry and it promises to change the way we smartphone owners use our smartphones.

IMG_6374

During the LG G2 Mobile Photography Workshop, we were given a quick introduction of the LG G2 smartphone and its capabilities by staff from LG Singapore. Thereafter, Aik Beng took the stage and shared with us about his mobile phone / street photography stories and techniques with the LG G2 and his workflow with the LG G2. At the end of the session, we had a hands on session with the LG G2 smartphone and testing it out around the meeting room located in Suntec City Convention Centre. I loved the rich colours 5.2-inch Full HD IPS (1080 x 1920 pixels / 423 ppi) of the LG G2 smartphone, along with the 13 megapixels and Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) technology inside the LG G2 smartphone, which frees users from the problems of taking blurred photos, allowing them to take clear photos in moving objects such as cars and trains. The super resolution of the phone also provides clearer and more detailed zoom quality. When we finished taking photos with our LG G2 smartphone, we were also able to try out LG portable NFC-enabled photo printer and printed out small mini photos for us to bring home.

Here are some photographs taken by Aik Beng using the LG G2
