DBS Marina Regatta 2013

The DBS Marina Regatta 2013 is Singapore’s Largest Water Sports Festival. Over two days of high speed Dragon Boating action, from local and international teams arriving at the beautiful Marina Bay, providing us great water sports action, fun and community festivals over 18th and 19th May 2013. While the main action is on the Dragon Boats in action, there were also a festival and carnival for the participants and spectators to join in and enjoy the wonderful atmosphere.

On the 18th May 2013, it was the 200m races; while on the 19th May 2013, it was the 500m races. Over these two days of Dragon Boating competition, close to 120 Dragon Boat teams paddled it out at the Marina Bay. It wasn’t just Dragon Boaters paddling, there were lots of high-octane action, spills, splashes and priceless sporting moments during DBS Marina Regatta 2013. When I was photographing the Dragon Boaters in action, I can see their passion, strength, determination, speed, teamwork, unity and precision when they were on the Dragon Boat paddling and pushing. I got the opportunity to take a ride on the bumboat and it brought us closer to the Dragon Boaters in action. Their priceless sporting moments and actions were gracefully captured down on my Canon 1DmarkIII with Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 L USM lens with EF 1.4X Tele-converter.

While there was action on the water, on the land, there were also fun, entertainment and action too! There was the Social Enterprise Carnival at the Waterfront Promenade, Cosplay Festival and Cosplay Parade at the Regatta Village on 18th May 2013. There were the DBS Marina Regatta Drum Challenge semi-finals on the 19th May 2013 and it attracted many people there! The food and beverages, games, roving circus acts and arts and crafts on display during DBS Marina Regatta 2013 made it not just a sporting event, it’s also a community and family carnival for the young and adults to enjoy the family bonding time and enjoy water sports action on the Marina Bay.

My coverage and scope were mainly sports photography and my focus was mainly on the Dragon Boats and the participants. I loved photographing, covering, writing and sharing this particular field of Sports Photojournalism and Sports Photography, allowing me to explore different angles, viewpoints and perspectives, besides the sporting and split second moments. Looking back over 2000 photographs that I shot during DBS Marina Regatta 2013, I am delighted to be able to cover and show different angles and perspectives of Dragon Boating sporting actions. Do check out my photographs taken at DBS Marina Regatta 2013 here –

Baybeats 2011

The night of live outdoor rock and roll music performances held annually at the Esplanade was back with a big bang, happened on 19th August to 21st August 2011, with a larger list of bands line up from different parts of the region, a time for rock fans to savor and enjoy the rock festival carnival.

While I wasn’t able to attend all 3 nights in a row, I was there on Saturday, 20th August, catching a few awesome performances from the local bands and the overseas bands as well. Growing up in an era of rock and roll music, missing my good old days as a teenager when rock and roll music was popular before the boy and girl pop bands took over the scene.

I caught the following bands there, from Turbo Goth from Philippines, Cheating Sons from Singapore, Moscow Olympics from Philippines and Buddhiston from Japan. They were great live rock band performers and the crowds loved them! They were electrifying, rocking and bringing joy to their rock fans and supporters on the grounds.

Buddhiston rocked me out with their performances and singing, hearing that they are back in Singapore for the 4th time in 7 years speaks great volume about them, their support and love for Singapore! When they finished their regular time rock performance, the fans on the grounds were screaming for them to come out again for a grand finale encore and they obliged with a rousing grand finale performance for the fans out there!

A night of live rock music performances, it was great and I am looking forward to BayBeats 2012! Bring it on! Rock & Roll! Meanwhile hope you all enjoy some of the photos taken here!

BonFire Festival 2009 (27th Nov Friday)

A night of fires burning and moving gracefully in action, choreographed beautifully with music and dance, by well trained and experienced performers from different parts of the world. It was the night of Singapore’s BonFire Festival 2009 held at the Dhoby Ghaut Green from the 27th November to the 28th November.

The night was HOT and their performance was HOT !! I am always fascinated by such wonderful arts performances and amazed at their skills, commitments and beauty. Along with the element of FIRE, somehow or rather, I am very attracted to FIRE maybe because my Earth element is FIRE too !

Got there early, sat at the last row of seats, saw many DSLRs mounted on tripods and monopods. I am a lazy photographer because I didn’t bring any of those 😛 … Soon the Fire performances began and I was happily firing away, first up was Fengshui, followed by Dai Zaobab and G.

However, something tragic happened, my Canon 30D went out of action again !! Another Error 99 and I suspect that it was the shutter again……… That’s it ….. Can’t take any more BonFire Festival 2009 photographs !! Do check my photographs of BonFire Festival 2009 before my Canon 30D went out of action !!

Continued watching other performances and I am very disappointed and angry that I wasn’t able to capture their wonderful performances in action and photographs !!! Overall, enjoyed myself thoroughly at BonFire Festival 2009 !!
