Haenyeo Singapore Photography Exhibition

A photography exhition on an intangible culture that is facing its own challenges and continuation in the modern era today, a rich tradition that is slowly being eroded and a risk of this tradition and culture being lost. This topic resonates deeply in me, an area where I have an interest and passion in. This is the Haenyeo Singapore Photography Exhibition by Jose Jeuland, a professional Fujifilm X photographer based in Singapore.

During the official launch event at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore, I had the opportunity to view the wonderful and amazing photography works on display, telling us the stories behind the Haenyeo people, brave and amazing women that take on such a dangerous nature of work. . I remembered watching the Haenyeo in action on television, diving into the water gathering clams, abalone or seaweed from the ocean floor with just a lead-weighted vest and googles.

Viewing the photography works by Jose, I can sense and feel the connections with the subjects in the photographs. Maybe I have similar connections in our photography genre, through my personal heritage, cultural and conservation photography projects that I have undertaken over the years.

There were more than 30,000 Haenyeo diving off the shores of Jeju and Udo Island daily. Today, less than 5,000 with two-thirds being over the age of 60 remains. This traditional culture is facing many challenges ahead and it is recognised by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage to be cherished.

The photography prints on display at the Haenyeo Singapore Photography Exhibition were supported by Epson Singapore, the official print sponsor by supporting the exhibition with its commercial and industrial photo graphic production printer, creating stunning high and professional quality prints.

In the exhibition, there is a collection of compelling portraits of Haenyo are printed using the Epson SureColor 64″ SC-P20070 with UltraChrome® PRO Pigment Ink on Epson’s Signature Worthy Hot Press Bright.

Let me share with you more information on the Epson SureColor 64″ SC-P20070 Printer

The exhibition-quality prints were created with Epson’s 64″ SureColor SC-P20070 printer, using the Epson’s UltraChrome PRO nine-colour pigment ink system, with an extended colour gamut and four levels of black, and advanced PrecisionCore™ MicroTFP printhead technology to develop vibrant prints with lasting durability.

Used with Epson’s Signature Worthy medias, this advanced printing technology produces exceptional colour gamut and high maximum density (D-Max), offering photographic quality prints that is a favourite of photographers and artists alike

Ms. Tan May Lin, General Manager, Sales, Marketing and Customer Service Division, Epson Singapore said, “Epson Singapore is proud to be the official print sponsor for Jose’s first ever photography exhibition in Singapore. Jose has captured wonderfully compelling stories that bring the raw emotions of the Haenyo sea women to life. With Epson’s photo graphic production printers, we’re excited that our unique combination of Epson’s printhead technology and UltraChrome® PRO archival ink technology can help deliver the very best representation of his artworks in final print format.”

José Jeuland, a Singapore-based French professional photographer said, “I am thankful for Epson’s support as I launch my first-ever photography exhibition here in Singapore. Epson’s unique printing technology accentuates the key features of the Haenyeo as seen from the photographs at the exhibition. This in turn portrays the raw emotions of these women of great fortitude. With Epson’s support, I am happy to share the inspiring story of the Haenyeo women-divers from Jeju, Korea.”

Whether you love photography, travel, traditional culture and also Korea, do take the time and visit the photography artworks of the Haenyeo at The Fullerton Hotel Singapore. It’s a real eye opener to a wonderful culture and tradition, facing its own challenges and hurdles in the modern era. Do check out the Epson printer on display there too!

Epson and SO Sofitel Singapore collaborate on AR experience

The world of travel, tourism and hospitality has benefitted and also changed from the technology boom over the past few decades. As we move into the future, new technology such as augmented reality (AR) has a role to play in a customer’s overall experience. How does AR plays a part in business operation in the hospitality industry such as a hotel?

AR today and in the near future, they can play a part in enhancing a guest experience beyond the luxuries, amenities, accommodation and hospitality in the hotel. How can they go about doing this?

In Singapore, Epson, a global leader in projection technology and visual communications, partners SO Sofitel Singapore for Southeast Asia first augmented reality (AR) smart glass experience within a hotel, using Epson’s latest Moverio BT-300 smart glasses. At the media event held recently, I had the opportunity to witness the launch and experience AR technology implementation in a hospitality organisation.

This was also my first time putting on the Moverio BT-300 and trying it out in a hospitality context. The Moverio BT-300 was lightweight and beautifully designed, the experience was pretty good with the visuals through the smart glasses and accompanying audio.

Guests can look forward to a true see-through immersive experience with the Moverio BT-300’s HD high-contrast display, which uses Epson’s cutting edge silicon-based OLED (organic light emitting diode) digital display technology. Powered by software from EON Reality, a world leader in Virtual and Augmented Reality-based knowledge transfer, the curated experience transports viewers into a part-real part-virtual world where informative content and videos blend seamlessly with real design elements found within the hotel lobby and suite.

Pictures courtesy of Epson Singapore and SO Sofitel Singapore

“It is our pleasure to partner leaders in Luxury Hospitality, Design and Augmented Reality to curate this experience that is a first in the region. With Moverio, Epson believes that the potential of Augmented Reality is limitless for commercial and enterprise usage – to create exceptional experiences using one of the most lightweight and comfortable smart eyewear on the market. By bringing the flavours and secrets within the heritage building to life through our technology, we look forward to deliver new and exciting multi-sensory experiences and showcase the familiar in a brand new way,” said Mr Siew Jin Kiat, Regional General Manager (Southeast Asia), Printers and Visual Products Division, Epson Singapore.

“We are So delighted to partner with Epson Singapore to be the first to launch the augmented reality smart glasses experience in Southeast Asia. When you step into SO Sofitel Singapore, you will be naturally captivated by the different elements of French design blending with local touches. With this AR smart glasses experience, guests will be able to discover and be intrigued by the surprising design elements,” said Mr Piotr Kupiec, General Manager for SO Sofitel Singapore.

On the pilot project, EON Reality Singapore’s Managing Director Mr Sridhar Sunkhad added, “Collaborating with Epson to augment the SO Sofitel unique guest experience will be an exciting journey that will teach us how Augmented Reality will become a part of our everyday lifestyle.”

Source: Epson and SO Sofitel Singapore press release

Starting my AR experiential tour journey from the SO Sofitel Hotel lobby, our first stop was the “The Lion Seal” emblem, designed for the hotel by the legendary Karl Langerfield. Once the AR experience started, I was greeted virtually by Isabelle Miaja, the interior designer of SO Sofitel Singapore.

Walking along the SO Sofitel Hotel lobby, I learned about the inspiration of SO Sofitel Singapore’s beautiful design, French elegance blending with the building’s unique history and modern Singapore, through the Moverio BT-300 smart glasses.

Continuing the journey inside the hotel, we entered into a special suite, the SO Sofitel Lofy suite. Through the Moverio BT-300 smart glasses, Isabelle returned on a composite screen, sharing her thoughts on the hotel design and special touches within the suite. I saw gorgeous art pieces that gave Isabelle the inspiration to combine French indulgence and the local culture of Singapore.

If you are staying at the gorgeous SO Sofitel, do try out the AR experience tour and if you happen to stay in the SO Lofy suite, you can also experience the SO Augmented room tour as well! For members of the public, if you wish to enjoy the SO Augmented hotel lobby tour, you can enquire with the guest relations officer, with sets subject to availability.

The world of augmented reality is now entering into our life, our work, the adoption and implementation is taking place among different organisations and industries. This AR collaboration project between Epson and SO Sofitel Singapore is the first in Southeast Asia within a hotel, I believe there will be more hotels entering and implementing AR technology to enhance their guests experiences.

I would like to thank Epson Singapore and SO Sofitel Singapore for the invitation to experience the new AR experience at SO Sofitel Singapore.

Geylang International FC renews sponsorship with Epson & announces 2017 S-League squad

On 10th February 2017, Geylang International FC (GIFC) officially announced that they will be partnering with Epson for another year. With this extension, Geylang International FC will be able to see increased partnership between the football club and Epson Singapore, the club’s Platinum sponsor.

It’s really great and wonderful to see Epson Singapore playing an important role in the outreach efforts for the local community and development of the sports scene in Singapore. Although there are government support, the sports scene still need the public and commercial entities support to help bring the sports to the next level.

Epson Singapore and GIFC has a commitment to develop youths through football, whereby talented youth footballers from GIFC are sent to for a training stint with Matsumoto Yamagata FC later this year. As a football fan, this is great news, to send young footballers overseas for training and exposure. The Epson Singapore Cup 2017 is taking place later this year, co-organised by GIFC and Epson, I am looking forward to this football competition for the youth in 2017.

At the official signing ceremony, we witnessed Mr Toshimitsu Tanaka, Managing Director (Southeast Asia) of Epson Singapore, and Mr Ben Teng, Chairman of GIFC, signing off and marking the start of another year of sponsorship and partnership.

After the official signing ceremony, GIFC also presented their 2017 S-League team line up, with an individual introduction of each team member being presented to the media and guests present at the event. Keep a lookout for some new faces. Fahrish Khan and Umar Akhbar who have moved up from the Prime League squad of 2016, Japanese centre-back Yuki Ichikawa, Victor Coto, Coasta Rican-born striker and Argentine attacking midfielder Ricardo.

Good luck to Geylang International FC for the S-League 2017 season and I am looking forward to hear more and cover on the youth football development between GIFC and Epson in Singapore!

Epson Singapore Cup 2016

The inaugural Epson Singapore Cup, a grassroots football competition for the Under-15 age group, took place over two weekends on the 3rd and 10th September 2016 at SAFRA Tampines. The U-15 preliminary matches took place on the 3rd September 2016 and the quarter finals, semi finals and final took place on the 10th September 2016. Due to insufficient qualified entries, the proposed U-17 preliminary matches that were supposed to be played on 4th September 2016 were cancelled.

b47x4225

Football is not just a sport that I played when I was growing up as a young kid, playing under the common corridor ground floor of the HDB block, basketball courts, schools and fields, football meant a lot to me, as a fan and supporter of this sport. When I knew about Epson organising the inaugural Singapore Cup, bringing grassroots football back to the community as part of their corporate service responsibility (CSR) initiatives, I was happy to hear about what they were planning to do for the youth and the football community in Singapore.

b47x4206

I went down on 3rd September, covering and photographing the preliminary matches by the U-15 teams. The Epson Singapore Cup in 2016 was their maiden debut , there were 10 U-15 teams playing it out for the knock out rounds next week on the 10th September. Although there were not too many football teams participating, it was still a good competition whereby the boys had fun and enjoyed themselves on the football fields.

b47x4500

When I was watching the boys playing football on the football pitches, it brought me back to my school days, when I just loved playing football after school and even during recess time (primary school days). This was also the time when I really enjoyed playing football, fun and carefree.

b47x4519

Due to a clash of events and a photography assignment on 10th September, I wasn’t able to come down to watch, document and photograph the knock out matches. I would share some photographs and updates provided by Epson Singapore and Asia PR Werkz for the coverage on 10th September.

How did the knock out matches leading to the final turned out on 10th September? Let me share with you some of the key points –

The morning started with a briefing from Head Coach of Geylang International FC (GIFC) Hasrin Jailani, who advised them to watch the shape and formation of their teams as they play, balance between playing as a team and showcasing their individual skills, and display good sportsmanship. GIFC players Isa Halim and Mark Hartmann spoke to the teams, encouraging them to go the extra mile to push themselves to win, respect the officials and other teams, and enjoy the game. Teams who made it to the quarter finals were subsequently briefed by local football legends Lionel Lewis and S Subramani, to better prepare them for the matches. Team “Valentia C.F” emerged the winner after a nail-biting battle with hot favourites “Team Alpha” tied at 0:0, and a penalty shootout of 3:2 ensued.

Title Sponsor Epson Singapore was encouraged by the results of the tournament. “As our first Epson Singapore Cup, we are encouraged and impressed by the mettle, skills and sportsmanship the teams have shown on the field. For our young champion, I wish them all the best and may the training stint bring them a step closer towards excellence in football. For the rest of the participants, I believe their dedication will not go unnoticed, and continue to pursue their passion and dreams in football,” said Ms. Tan May Lin, Epson Singapore’s General Manager (Sales, Marketing & Customer Service Division).

The organisers will be reviewing the tournament and will announce subsequently if they will continue with this competition for next year. On a personal note, I really hope they will continue with the Epson Singapore Cup for year 2017. I support this grassroots level football competition, it’s an excellent initiative to grow our local football scene, and we need the changes to our local Singapore football scene. Starting from the grassroots, the foundation and base of the Singapore society, this is where we should and we must start from.

Oh yes, I would to congratulate Team Valentia C.F for winning the inaugural Epson Singapore Cup! Have a fun learning and training stint experience at the prestigious Valencia C.F Soccer School in Singapore.

Launch of inaugural Epson Singapore Cup 2016

Football, probably the most popular sports that is being played and watched by millions of people around the world. In Singapore, football is our most popular sport, we Singaporeans love football, either playing or watching football. This sport is something close to our hearts, it can be a national discussion topic at times, sometimes it is always a topic very close to our hearts and soul that we talk a lot about.

With such love and passion for football, Epson Singapore together with Sinad Sports jointly announced the launch of the inaugural Epson Singapore Cup 2016 this coming September. I was at the media launch event for the inaugural Epson Singapore Cup 2016 and it was great news to hear what Epson Singapore have been doing for the local community particularly for the football community in Singapore.

Epson Singapore Cup logo

This is part (and the latest initiative) of Epson Singapore corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives by the technology giant to extend its outreach efforts in the local communities that they opeates in. This is great news for the football community in Singapore, bringing football to grassroots level and for the kids to play, participate, compete and enjoy football.

“Epson’s roots are in sports because the first Epson printer was developed from a printing device we created for the 1964 Olympics. Since then, our brand is closely associated with sports. Football is the world’s number one sport and it has enabled us to reach out to both individuals and businesses, to the young and old, to men and women who follow the game. It is also a sport that fosters values like self-confidence, teamwork and positive thinking among its fans, especially with youths. Youth development is an integral element of our CSR focus in Singapore and around the region – and we believe that Epson Singapore Cup represents our continuous commitment to inspire and empower our youths,” said Mr Toshimitsu Tanaka, Managing Director of Epson’s regional office in Singapore.

B47X1782

Exciting prizes await the winners too, the champion from the U15 competition will receive a 2-day training stint at Valencia CF Soccer School in Singapore, while the champion from the U17 competition will win the grand prize of a 5-day overseas training stint at Matsumoto Yamaga Football Club, one of Japan’s top J2 football clubs.

Even though the Epson Singapore Cup 2016 is a competition with prizes to be won, the organisers are not just doing this as a competition only. They have plans to engage the grassroots, the football community of players and fans, the children playing and competing in the tournament.

The participating teams can look forward to learning valuable footballing lessons from the coaches and football idols –

  • On 3 & 4 September, prior to the start of the tournament, VCF Soccer Schools Technical Director in Southeast Asia, Mr. Gonzalo Sanz, and the Head Coach for Geylang International Football Club, Mr Hasrin Jailani, will meet with participating teams to offer pointers on playing 7-a-side matches.
  • During the tournament days, players from Geylang International Football Club will take turns to “walk the grounds”, observe, offer advice and cheer on the teams.
  • On 10 September, the two finalist teams from each category will have a closed-door session with former national football legends and star players. They will also find out how to better prepare themselves ahead of the finals.

Remember to check out Epson Singapore and Geylang International Football Club Facebook Pages for updates!

“Epson Singapore Cup was borne out of a common desire to reach out to as many youths as possible, to fuel their passion and to learn from the best in the field. By partnering key players, especially those in the local football community, we hope that the Cup can bring aspiring footballers a step closer to realizing their dreams. We are certainly looking forward to an exciting tournament and I encourage fans to join us and cheer on the participating teams. In addition, we hope that this tournament will become a viable platform for talents to be discovered, thereby contributing to raising the standard of play for the sport locally, regionally and even globally,” said Ms Tan May Lin, Epson Singapore’s General Manager (Sales, Marketing & Customer Service Division).

“The Euros 2016 in France has proven to us that the size of a country is no limitation to its capacity to excel in sports. Iceland, with its population of about 330,000, was one of the talking points of an otherwise ordinary tournament. It’s as much about identifying and nurturing talents as well as providing them with the right infrastructure and avenues to fulfill their potential. The Epson Singapore Cup is about going back to the grassroots – to the football loving masses. Throwing the youngsters the challenge of showing us what they have in them and opening up their horizons to learn from the more experienced and successful in the sport. We hope that many will grab this unique opportunity and make the Epson Singapore Cup a long-term feature in our football calendar”, said Mr. Jeremy Chan, Chairman of Sinad Sports Pte Ltd.

Source: Epson Singapore Press Release

Personally, I also echo the words and thoughts of Ms Tan May Lin and Mr Jeremy Chan. Looking at how Iceland shook up European football (at the same time, attracting world footballing community attention and affection) with just a population of 330,000, I really hope that Singapore football can one day in the future make an impact in a similar manner too.

Do check out my introduction and short technical specifications post here and the review post which I did recently after completing my 2 weeks review of the photo printer. Overall, it was a great experience and I am happy with my photography print outs and sharing around!
