They will also feature as vendors in the regatta’s art market and food village.

DBS Marina Regatta 2015 – 6th and 7th June

The first weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015 finished on a high and it was carried along into the second weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015 on the 6th and 7th June. Most of the shore activities at The Promontory @ Marina Bay continued into the second weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015. On the waters of Marina Bay, it was the water sports weekend – the Best of Southeast Asia Sports with DBS Marina Regatta and SEA Games Traditional Boat (Dragon Boat) Races action on the 6th and 7th June 2015.

IMG_5322

For the DBS Marina Regatta 2015, the races that were held were

  • DBS Singapore Premier Mixed (22 crew)
  • DBS Tertiary Mixed (12 crew)
  • DBS Corporate Mixed (12 crew)

For the 28th SEA Games 2015, the races that were held were

  • 6 crew, 200m (Men’s and Women’s) World’s First
  • 6 crew 500m (Men’s and Women’s) World’s First
  • 12 crew 200m (Men’s and Women’s)
  • 12 crew 500m (Men’s and Women’s)

With the addition of SEA Games Traditional Boat Races at the DBS Marina Regatta, there were less races compared to the first weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015. Lesser races doesn’t mean it was less exciting, instead, it was a great spectacle for the spectators sitting around the Marina Bay area watching and supporting the Dragon Boat Paddlers in action.

2T2J6387

During the SEA Games Traditional Boat Races, the supporters came out in force to cheer for their fellow country people participating and competing in the Dragon Boat racing. They were vocal and expressive and some were colourful in their attire (donning national colours)! I can hear the spectators and supporters cheering from across the waters, near the Marina Bay City Gallery and Marina Bay Sands when I was photographing the Dragon Boat paddlers from The Promontory @ Marina Bay!

2T2J6482

I rotated around various locations and sometimes stationed myself at the opposite side from The Promontory @ Marina Bay, the steps/seats between Marina Bay Sands and Marina Bay City Gallery, sitting as close to the waters of Marina Bay. With my Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 lens, I focus and seek out to find the DBS Marina Regatta paddlers and also the SEA Games paddlers at the pontoon/jetty, the embarkation and disembarkation point for the Dragon Boats. The emotions and facial expressions of the SEA Games paddlers were priceless and I was happy that I photographed my Team Singapore paddlers out there on the waters of Marina Bay, a small contribution of my photographs to Team Singapore in action at SEA Games 2015!

2T2J6278

On Sunday 7th June 2015 morning, the weather wasn’t good and I was hoping (and everybody else there too!) that it doesn’t affect the entire Sunday’s race schedule for both DBS Marina Regatta and SEA Games events. The weather slowly changed for the better towards the afternoon and by the late afternoon, the weather around Marina Bay was beautiful with blue sky and white clouds!

2T2J6598

Mother Nature blessed the DBS Marina Regatta 2015 and SEA Games 2015 races with a gorgeous rainbow across the horizon in the finale races for both DBS Marina Regatta and SEA Games. I was very happy that I managed to capture it down in memory and share this lovely blessing around. An omen, a blessing, a wonderful and beautiful natural phenomena. This rainbow inspired me to write a dedicated story – the rainbow emerging to the DBS Asia Dragons when they crossed the finishing line in first position. Indeed, the symbolism of a rainbow “The end of the Rainbow signifies a Pot of Gold and the magic that surrounds your dreams coming true”

2T2J5831

The Best of Southeast Asia Sports on 6th and 7th June 2015 – DBS Marina Regatta 2015 and SEA Games 2015 Traditional Boat Races were brought to a close with a spectacular grand finale. It had been two exciting weekends for me, covering, photographing and sharing DBS Marina Regatta 2015 and also covering the SEA Games 2015 Traditional Boat Races!

2T2J6025

Igniting Possibilities, Igniting The Bay for everyone, the paddlers, the people behind the scenes, the supporters. The 2015 edition is the biggest DBS Marina Regatta till date and the second weekend of 6th and 7th June, comprising of both the DBS Marina Regatta 2015 and SEA Games 2015 Traditional Boat Races ignites the Marina Bay, celebrating the win, the happiness, friendships, community and sea sports extravaganza in the heart of Marina Bay!

DBS Marina Regatta 2015 – 30th and 31st May

In its fourth edition, Singapore’s biggest water sports festival, the DBS Marina Regatta returned to Marina Bay Singapore, brining great action and fun on and off the waters of Marina Bay. Covering over three weekends from 30th to 31st May, 6th to 7th June and 13th to 14th June 2015. In conjunction with the 28th SEA Games 2015 held in Singapore from 5th to 16th June, Traditional Boat (Dragon Boat) Races were held together with DBS Marina Regatta on 6th and 7th June and Sailing Races was held on 13th and 14th June 2015.

IMG_5062

For DBS Marina Regatta 2015, there were close to 180 teams and 2,000 athletes participating in this year’s Dragon Boating event! There were also a growing number of female Dragon Boaters – close to 20% more than the previous year. This was indeed the biggest water sports festival in Singapore and it’s growing!

2T2J5381

Let me bring you through my eyes, heart, stories and photographs of the first weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015, on the 30th and 31st May. This was my third year covering DBS Marina Regatta, I am quite familiar with the Dragon Boat Races and schedules. On Saturday 30th May, it was the 200m race distance and on Sunday 31st May, it was the 500m race distance.

2T2J4966

The race categories were as follows:

  • DBS Singapore Premier Open (22 crew)
  • DBS Singapore Premier Women (12 crew)
  • DBS Tertiary Open (22 crew)
  • DBS Tertiary Women (12 crew)
  • DBS Corporate Open (12 crew)
  • DBS Corporate Women (12 crew)

There were lots of Dragon Boating action on the waters of Marina Bay whereby spectators can enjoy watching them in action at The Promontory @ Marina Bay, Marina Bay City Gallery area and Fullerton area. For this year, besides my fast action capture of fast and furious Dragon Boating paddling, I decided to go more into the “behind the scenes” part of Dragon Boating, the preparation, the emotions and camederie of the paddlers. The experiences were pretty amazing and these are the type of the other story of sports photography that we sports photographers love to capture and share. Through my photographs, I hope that I am to share more on the scenes behind the scenes.

IMG_4850

Off the waters, on the ground level, DBS Marina Regatta 2015 transformed The Promontory @ Marina Bay into a big sports, recreational and leisure sports carnival village, there is something for everybody who is at DBS Marina Regatta 2015. There were many different events and activities happening during DBS Marina Regatta 2015, some of the events and activities that I manage to cover and photographed were

  • DBS Art Park ~ There were eight up and coming artists aged between 18-35 from NOISE working on four giant 2m by 2m art cubes.
  • Living Art ~ The re-enactment of a painting, “Life by the River” by renowned Singaporean artist Liu Kang.
  • Extreme Sports Arena ~ Rock climbing and Zipline (a.k.a Flying Fox)
  • DBS Food Village by Savour ~ Delicious food galore.

IMG_5018

IMG_4809

I rotated myself around the various locations of DBS Marina Regatta 2015, photographing and documenting sports action on the waters, behind the scenes of the Dragon Boat, waiting, preparation, supporting, the euphoria and emotions. Towards the later part of the afternoons on both 30th and 31st, these were the time for the finale, the various finals for the 200m (30th May) and 500m (31st May). That’s also where I had the enjoyment and adrenaline rush of photographing the fast sychronised Dragon Boat paddling action on the waters of Marina Bay from the The Promontory @ Marina Bay.

2T2J4484

Over the first weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015 on 30th and 31st May, there were great action on the waters and off the waters, on the ground level. Rounding up my first weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015, I was looking forward to the second weekend with the 28th SEA Games Traditional Boat (Dragon Boat) Races in action together along with DBS Marina Regatta 2015!

A Beautiful Rainbow on 7th June 2015

Rainbow, a very colourful and beautiful natural phenomena. I had always try to photograph rainbow whenever I can with my camera if I brought my camera out. Recently, I was covering DBS Marina Regatta 2015 on 7th June 2015, waiting at one of my favourite spots in the heart of Marina Bay Singapore, The Promontory @ Marina Bay. The weather was bad in the morning and slowly changed to good weather in the afternoon, clear blue sky and gorgeous white cloud formations behind the Marina Bay Financial Centre and Marina Bay Sands area. My eyes lit up when I saw something colourful across the horizon, I spotted a rainbow and I quickly picked up my Canon EOS 70D with my wide angle lens EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM to capture the beautiful rainbow!

Once I captured the beautiful rainbow, I changed to my sports photography gear setup, my trustworthy Canon EOS 1D Mark III with EF 300mm f/2.8 USM L lens. I was getting ready to shoot one of the main races of DBS Marina Regatta 2015, the 500m DBS Corporate Mixed Final, the Grand Finale Race for DBS Marina Regatta 2015! The DBS Asia Dragons mixed team was competing and I was on the lookout for them to photograph them in high speed paddling action on Marina Bay! The DBS Asia Dragons mixed team were very dedicated and the whole team was in synchronisation with their paddling strokes and movements. I can see their passion, sheer determination and thirst for success from the photographs that I shot!

IMG_5327

When the DBS Asia Dragons mixed team crossed the finishing line, the beautiful rainbow was there to welcome the winners of the 500m Corporate Mixed Final. This was a most fitting finale to a great ending for the DBS Asia Dragons paddlers, their stories, trainings and journey in reaching this pinnacle! As they finished and completed a great race, with a beautiful rainbow welcoming the winners home!

I looked up on the symbolism of Rainbow and found it here

“The end of the Rainbow signifies a pot of Gold and the magic that surrounds your dreams coming true”

Source: Universe of Symbolism

Rainbow always amaze and mesmerise me, I am also taking this beautiful rainbow to dedicate this rainbow to Someone with the words below –

“I want to dedicate this rainbow to you. Keep fighting and be strong, something beautiful awaits u at the end of it”

It’s a blessing to spot and capture such a beautiful rainbow, not just with my camera gears, also with my eyes, heart and soul. Time to Pass-It-On and Pay-It-Forward!

Canon PowerShot G1X Mark II with EVF-DC1 Review

The Canon PowerShot G1X Mark II is Canon’s latest flagship digital compact camera, a powerful and most premium amongst Canon’s digital camera lineup. Among all the compact digital camera brands and models in the market today, the Canon G1X Mark II definitely stands out in the advanced/powerful compact digital cameras with a large sensor for her class of cameras.

powershot-g1x-mark-ii-1

Photograph Courtesy of Canon Singapore

I brough the Canon G1X Mark II to cover major events during the two weeks review period and it was a good, lightweight and powerful compact digital camera that gave me the connectivity to upload and share on social media channels and platforms. I worked with the Canon G1X Mark II during major events DBS Marina Regatta 2014, Play @ NMS and Masak Masak: My Childhood. On both major events, I was able to share and upload photographs that I took with the Canon PowerShot G1X Mark II into my iPad and iPhone for uploading and sharing on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook.

IMG_0649

Besides the major events that I attended and covered during the two weeks review period, I brought the Canon G1X Mark II on a daily walkabout camera on a few days, for street photography and food photography. The clarity and quality of the Digic 6 sensor makes it produce pretty good quality photographs from my night street photography walkabout.

IMG_0726

IMG_0789

During my two weeks with the Canon G1X Mark II, I had a good mix of different experiences with it and here are my thoughts, views and opinions on the pros and cons of the Canon G1X Mark II –

Pros

–       One touch wi-fi button to connect the Canon PowerShot G1X Mark II to the smartphone or tablet.

–       Shutter is quiet.

–       Rubber hand grip/padding on the side and back of the camera giving photographers a better feel and grip of the camera.

–       Many features packed inside a compact camera body.

–       The built of the Canon G1X Mark II is solid and firm.

–       Digic 6 sensor.

–       Colours and details on LCD are sharp and bright.

–       There is the option of adding on an electronic viewfinder (EVF) to the Canon G1X Mark II for photographers who wish to shoot through viewfinder.

–       An intelligent and powerful compact digital camera packed with features and functions.

–       31 points Auto Focus.

–       1.5” type CMOS sensor

–       5X optical view with Image Stabliser

–       180-degree upward and 45-degree downward tilt touch screen LCD (good for selfie, wefie)

–       Magnesium alloy body, sturdy, solid and strong

–       Dual Control Rings for greater control

–       Remote shooting can be performed with the Canon G1X Mark II connected to the Canon Camera Window app on the smartphone/tablet.

–       The Canon Camera Window app allows you to view the photographs on the Canon G1X Mark II and you can download it into your smartphone/tablet for sharing on social media channels and platforms.

Cons

–       On/Off button is placed in between dial and shutter button, it can be difficult to press and the button is small.

–       Play/View button on the top panel is small and might be easily missed

–       The round dial at the back of the camera is small and has other functions together inside, thus resulting in accidental activation of other functions when turning the dial.

–       In Manual mode, for photographer who wants to control both the shutter and aperture, it can be confusing on how to change them, having to press the Change Setting button twice before it can be activated for the photographer to be able to use and control shutter and aperture.

–       The zoom lens is a bit lagging when zooming in and out from wide to telephoto.

In Manual mode, the front focusing ring on the lens allows you to change shutter speed. When the Change Settings button on the back dial is pressed twice, the front focusing ring allows you to change the shutter speed and the back dial allows you to change the aperture. This function can be a bit troublesome at times and would need a bit more time to get the hang of the functions and buttons of the Canon G1X Mark II.

IMG_1005

IMG_1004

Canon EVF-DC1

The latest photography accessory to Canon’s line up is the Electronic Viewfinder, the EVF-DC1, and it is an optional accessory that can be mounted on the Canon PowerShot G1X Mark II. Having the EVF-DC1 gives the photographer using the Canon G1X Mark II a professional DSLR feel and control with the ease and point-and-shoot convenience.

IMG_1109

The EVF-DC1 is an ideal photography accessory and welcomed by purist photographers who prefer to shoot through the viewfinder. It is clear and bright when shooting through the electronic viewfinder. The speed is pretty fast when the photographer’s view changes from LCD screen to the electronic viewfinder.

IMG_1218

If you plan to own the Canon PowerShot G1X Mark II, I would strongly recommend the Canon EVF-DC1! Nothing beats the feel of viewing and shooting through the viewfinder!

The Canon G1X Mark II stands out in her class of advanced/powerful compact digital cameras available in the market. If you are looking for a daily usage, events or travel compact camera, the Canon G1X Mark II is strongly recommended for your consideration! Do check out my collection of photographs shot with the Canon G1X Mark II here on Flickr!

I would like to thank Canon Singapore and Ogilvy Public Relations for this opportunity to test and review the Canon G1X Mark II.

Dragon Boating action was on both days, 17th and 18th May, with the 200m races on Saturday 17th and 500m races on 18th May. The weather was good on Saturday 17th and there were pretty good competitive Dragon Boating action on the water for all spectators around the Marina Bay area. The action was fast and intense, with many supporters cheering on their teammates from the sidelines of the Promontory at Marina Bay.

However, the weather on Sunday, 18th May, was bad, with heavy thunderstorm and downpour. In lieu of the safety for the Dragon Boat paddlers and events ground staff, the Dragon Boat races were not able to go ahead and many have to be cancelled due to safety considerations from the bad weather conditions and lightning risks. While there will be disappointments from the competitors/participants, they will understand that safety for all competitors/participants were the utmost priority and cannot be compromised. The weather on Sunday cleared up around the late afternoon and there were 5 races that could go ahead in the early evening. The last 5 Dragon Boat races gave the grand finale to the finishing line of DBS Marina Regatta 2014!

There was something for everybody there, from the young to the adults! There were the Asia Cosplay Meet, Asian Food Festival, Asian Drum Challenge, DBS Movies By The Bay, Play Zone, DBS Cycle By The Bay, and Photo Booth and Merchandise booth to buy gifts! The various different land activities brought about added fun and festivities to the waters sports festival! Here is my photography coverage collection of DBS Marina Regatta 2014 on Flickr!

Selfies for good was launched for DBS Marina Regatta 2014, a movement to celebrate the enthusiasm of the participants and visitors to DBS Marina Regatta who took many photographs (and selfies) and sharing it on social media platforms such as Instagram. For every selfie taken at DBS Marina Regatta 2014, a free meal will be pledged to a primary school student supported by the Student Advisory Centre. This was a great and noble initiative!

DBS Movies By The Bay

Watching movies in the outdoors under the stars, this was something that I haven’t done for a long time since I was a kid! Last weekend, on 18th October 2013, I went back in time to relieve my childhood memories to watch a movie in the outdoors under the stars and bright lights of our Marina Bay cityscape! This was the DBS Movies By The Bay, part of DBS efforts and active involvement in livening up the Marina Bay area with many exciting, fun and interesting initiatives and events!

One of exciting event organised by DBS that took place earlier in the year was the DBS Marina Regatta 2013. This sporting event took place earlier in the year, attracted great crowds and participation from local and overseas dragon boating teams, along with community carnivals and sea activities for the public to enjoy! Do check out my coverage and write up of the DBS Marina Regatta 2013 that happened on the weekend of 18th and 19th May 2013 and the Bay Festival that happened on the weekend on 24th and 25th May 2013!

On the 18th October 2013 at DBS Movies By The Bay, the movie shown was Dark Knight, voted by the public as their favourite movie to be shown during DBS Movies By The Bay. It was a fun time eating snacks and watching an outdoor movie with friends, a good event for family fun activities with the young children too! There were food and drinks outlets for you to grab some snacks and drinks. As part of DBS support of Social Entrepreneurship, these outlets were operated by various social enterprises which will be selling popcorn, drinks and snacks during the movie screening.
