During DBSMR, visitors can see social entrepreneurship in action at BayFest on land. This is part of DBS’ continued efforts to champion the development of the social entrepreneurship sector to build a socially-conscious society, social enterprises such MINDS, Society Staples and Bettr Barista will provide many of the services in the regatta such as drinking water, catering and event organisation. They will also feature as vendors in the regatta’s art market and food village.

DBS Marina Regatta 2015 – 6th and 7th June

The first weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015 finished on a high and it was carried along into the second weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015 on the 6th and 7th June. Most of the shore activities at The Promontory @ Marina Bay continued into the second weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015. On the waters of Marina Bay, it was the water sports weekend – the Best of Southeast Asia Sports with DBS Marina Regatta and SEA Games Traditional Boat (Dragon Boat) Races action on the 6th and 7th June 2015.

IMG_5322

For the DBS Marina Regatta 2015, the races that were held were

  • DBS Singapore Premier Mixed (22 crew)
  • DBS Tertiary Mixed (12 crew)
  • DBS Corporate Mixed (12 crew)

For the 28th SEA Games 2015, the races that were held were

  • 6 crew, 200m (Men’s and Women’s) World’s First
  • 6 crew 500m (Men’s and Women’s) World’s First
  • 12 crew 200m (Men’s and Women’s)
  • 12 crew 500m (Men’s and Women’s)

With the addition of SEA Games Traditional Boat Races at the DBS Marina Regatta, there were less races compared to the first weekend of DBS Marina Regatta 2015. Lesser races doesn’t mean it was less exciting, instead, it was a great spectacle for the spectators sitting around the Marina Bay area watching and supporting the Dragon Boat Paddlers in action.

2T2J6387

During the SEA Games Traditional Boat Races, the supporters came out in force to cheer for their fellow country people participating and competing in the Dragon Boat racing. They were vocal and expressive and some were colourful in their attire (donning national colours)! I can hear the spectators and supporters cheering from across the waters, near the Marina Bay City Gallery and Marina Bay Sands when I was photographing the Dragon Boat paddlers from The Promontory @ Marina Bay!

2T2J6482

I rotated around various locations and sometimes stationed myself at the opposite side from The Promontory @ Marina Bay, the steps/seats between Marina Bay Sands and Marina Bay City Gallery, sitting as close to the waters of Marina Bay. With my Canon EF 300mm f/2.8 lens, I focus and seek out to find the DBS Marina Regatta paddlers and also the SEA Games paddlers at the pontoon/jetty, the embarkation and disembarkation point for the Dragon Boats. The emotions and facial expressions of the SEA Games paddlers were priceless and I was happy that I photographed my Team Singapore paddlers out there on the waters of Marina Bay, a small contribution of my photographs to Team Singapore in action at SEA Games 2015!

2T2J6278

On Sunday 7th June 2015 morning, the weather wasn’t good and I was hoping (and everybody else there too!) that it doesn’t affect the entire Sunday’s race schedule for both DBS Marina Regatta and SEA Games events. The weather slowly changed for the better towards the afternoon and by the late afternoon, the weather around Marina Bay was beautiful with blue sky and white clouds!

2T2J6598

Mother Nature blessed the DBS Marina Regatta 2015 and SEA Games 2015 races with a gorgeous rainbow across the horizon in the finale races for both DBS Marina Regatta and SEA Games. I was very happy that I managed to capture it down in memory and share this lovely blessing around. An omen, a blessing, a wonderful and beautiful natural phenomena. This rainbow inspired me to write a dedicated story – the rainbow emerging to the DBS Asia Dragons when they crossed the finishing line in first position. Indeed, the symbolism of a rainbow “The end of the Rainbow signifies a Pot of Gold and the magic that surrounds your dreams coming true”

2T2J5831

The Best of Southeast Asia Sports on 6th and 7th June 2015 – DBS Marina Regatta 2015 and SEA Games 2015 Traditional Boat Races were brought to a close with a spectacular grand finale. It had been two exciting weekends for me, covering, photographing and sharing DBS Marina Regatta 2015 and also covering the SEA Games 2015 Traditional Boat Races!

2T2J6025

Igniting Possibilities, Igniting The Bay for everyone, the paddlers, the people behind the scenes, the supporters. The 2015 edition is the biggest DBS Marina Regatta till date and the second weekend of 6th and 7th June, comprising of both the DBS Marina Regatta 2015 and SEA Games 2015 Traditional Boat Races ignites the Marina Bay, celebrating the win, the happiness, friendships, community and sea sports extravaganza in the heart of Marina Bay!

DBS Marina Regatta 2014

DBS Marina Regatta 2014, Singapore’s Biggest Water Sports Festival was held recently at the Marina Bay area on 17th and 18th May. This wasn’t just a water sports festival with competitive Dragon Boating paddling actions; there were lots of fun and activities on the land too! Dragon Boating action was on both days, 17th and 18th May, with the 200m races on Saturday 17th and 500m races on 18th May. The weather was good on Saturday 17th and there were pretty good competitive Dragon Boating action on the water for all spectators around the Marina Bay area. The action was fast and intense, with many supporters cheering on their teammates from the sidelines of the Promontory at Marina Bay.

2T2J6210

However, the weather on Sunday, 18th May, was bad, with heavy thunderstorm and downpour. In lieu of the safety for the Dragon Boat paddlers and events ground staff, the Dragon Boat races were not able to go ahead and many have to be cancelled due to safety considerations from the bad weather conditions and lightning risks. While there will be disappointments from the competitors/participants, they will understand that safety for all competitors/participants were the utmost priority and cannot be compromised. The weather on Sunday cleared up around the late afternoon and there were 5 races that could go ahead in the early evening. The last 5 Dragon Boat races gave the grand finale to the finishing line of DBS Marina Regatta 2014!

2T2J6248

IMG_0937

There were an array of fun and festivities on the land, around the DBS Marina Regatta events/carnival village, for the participants and visitors to enjoy and have fun in! There was something for everybody there, from the young to the adults! There were the Asia Cosplay Meet, Asian Food Festival, Asian Drum Challenge, DBS Movies By The Bay, Play Zone, DBS Cycle By The Bay, and Photo Booth and Merchandise booth to buy gifts! The various different land activities brought about added fun and festivities to the waters sports festival! Here is my photography coverage collection of DBS Marina Regatta 2014 on Flickr!

IMG_0740

IMG_0824

Selfies for good was launched for DBS Marina Regatta 2014, a movement to celebrate the enthusiasm of the participants and visitors to DBS Marina Regatta who took many photographs (and selfies) and sharing it on social media platforms such as Instagram. For every selfie taken at DBS Marina Regatta 2014, a free meal will be pledged to a primary school student supported by the Student Advisory Centre. This was a great and noble initiative!

2T2J6950

With the conclusion of the final 2 Dragon Boat races in the evening and as the sun sets down on a Sunday evening, DBS Marina Regatta 2014 came to a close with an electronic kites display and a fireworks display at Marina Bay. Till we meet again next year for DBS Marina Regatta 2015!

DBS Movies By The Bay

Watching movies in the outdoors under the stars, this was something that I haven’t done for a long time since I was a kid! Last weekend, on 18th October 2013, I went back in time to relieve my childhood memories to watch a movie in the outdoors under the stars and bright lights of our Marina Bay cityscape! This was the DBS Movies By The Bay, part of DBS efforts and active involvement in livening up the Marina Bay area with many exciting, fun and interesting initiatives and events!

2T2J5008

One of exciting event organised by DBS that took place earlier in the year was the DBS Marina Regatta 2013. This sporting event took place earlier in the year, attracted great crowds and participation from local and overseas dragon boating teams, along with community carnivals and sea activities for the public to enjoy! Do check out my coverage and write up of the DBS Marina Regatta 2013 that happened on the weekend of 18th and 19th May 2013 and the Bay Festival that happened on the weekend on 24th and 25th May 2013!

On the 18th October 2013 at DBS Movies By The Bay, the movie shown was Dark Knight, voted by the public as their favourite movie to be shown during DBS Movies By The Bay. It was a fun time eating snacks and watching an outdoor movie with friends, a good event for family fun activities with the young children too! There were food and drinks outlets for you to grab some snacks and drinks. As part of DBS support of Social Entrepreneurship, these outlets were operated by various social enterprises which will be selling popcorn, drinks and snacks during the movie screening.

The Band of Photographers behind the scenes (DBS Marina Regatta 2013)

Inspired by fellow photographer Callan’s post, I decided to say a big thank you to the band of photographers (and the DBS crew) behind the scenes of the recent DBS Marina Regatta 2013 that we covered, documented, photograph many different scenes, angles, perspectives, emotions and moments of DBS Marina Regatta 2013. This was a great compilation and collage from the works of the various photographers’ skills and field of expertise.

Since I was mainly covering the sports segment Dragon Boating, there weren’t many chances for me to capture my fellow photographers in action. This was also my first time meeting Mr Brown and Bryan! Working together with such a talented band of photographers, it was indeed a great honour!  When I was shooting the DBS Marina Regatta 2013, I had a great time shooting in the event and with the Band of Photographers, even though I was carrying about 6-7kg of camera gear for 3 out of 4 days! We all chatted when we were able to catch a short break together and doo check out their works on their websites too!

Here are some of my photographs of them in action, looking back at my photographs, I should have taken more of my fellow photographers in action!

With all our powers and strengths (photographs) combined, here’s an awesome video production – the #DBSMarinaRegatta2013 Story – Singapore’s First Community Generated Video Story

DBS Marina Regatta 2013 – Bay Festival 24th & 25th May

The DBS Marina Regatta 2013 rocked Marina Bay on the 18th and 19th May 2013, with high octane Dragon Boating sporting actions and festivities around the Social Enterprise Carnival and Regatta Village. The activities did not end here on the 18th and 19th May, instead the activities and festivities continued with the Bay Festival happening on the 24th and 25th May 2013. Both days were filled with exciting and interesting activities on the water and on the land.

2T2J9038

2T2J9013

On the 24th May, there were Invitational Dragon Boat Races from the Schools, Community and Open Categories. This was a good time for them to participate and have fun in Dragon Boating competition. The atmosphere was great, fun and a friendly sporting carnival for people of all ages and nationalities. The Social Enterprise Carnival was there and there were arts and crafts, circus acts, food and beverage and games for those enjoying the festivities on the land. I went back to Marina Promontory to capture the Invitational Dragon Boat Races, choosing different locations and angles to capture Dragon Boating sporting actions at Marina Bay. It was great to see many different colours just like the DBS Marina Regatta 2013 International and competitive races the weekend before that. When the Invitational Dragon Boat Races finished in the evening, the attention was turned towards the DBS Marina Regatta Drum Challenge Finals. The Drum Challenge Finals was a great spectacle and enjoyment for the spectators. With their noise level and enthusiasm, they definitely gave DBS Marina Regatta 2013 Bay Festival a big shout out!

2T2J9085

2T2J9338

On the 25th May, it was Water Craft by the Bay, a time for the public to experience sailing, ocean kayaking and Dragon Boating in the Marina Bay. Participants of young and old were enthusiastic and excited, trying out the different sailing activities available. They had a fun and leisure sea sports time in the Marina Bay. The Social Enterprise Carnival was around too for the public to enjoy the festivities and fun on the land, allowing the public to enjoy leisure and recreational fun on the land or in the Marina Bay! With all the various water and land activities and events, it was definitely a day of family and fun activities at Bay Festival 2013! In the late afternoon, I joined fellow photographer friends Weili, Callan, AikBeng,Bryan and Ivan at Singapore’s first Phonegraphy Awards for DBS Marina Regatta 2013 Story Awards. Callan, AikBeng, Bryan and Ivan were part of the panel discussion on stage to share about their photography experiences, their style of photography and their tips on how to tell compelling stories via Instagram. Listening to my friends, the expert photographers, sharing their stories, it was definitely an eye-opener and a great insight.

After the awards were chosen and presented, the final finale was the unveiling of the video and it was very impressive!! Our photographs and videos from our group of photographers over the two weekends, collating together into an awesome video. Take a look at this awesome video below!

As DBS Marina Regatta 2013 came to an end, I had a great time, enjoying, watching Dragon Boating action over two weekends. Photographing the sporting actions, moments and expressions, working with such a wide, diverse and very talented photographers who are also social media influencers.
