Extreme Sailing Series 2015 Act 1 – Singapore

The Extreme Sailing Series 2015 returned back to Singapore for the opening sailing race calendar in the heart of Marina Bay Singapore. Held from the 5th to 8th February 2015, it was great to see high octane sailing action in the heart of Marina Bay, surrounded by the heart of Singapore’s Central Business District, joined by tricky wind conditions and directions, posing great challenges and tactics by the captains and their crews!

It was fun to be back photographing and covering Extreme Sailing Series in Singapore, I remembered documenting the Extreme Sailing Series in 2013 and 2014! This is my third year photographing the sailing competition in Singapore! Let me share with my readers again, a recap on the Extreme Sailing Series –

Established in 2007, the Extreme Sailing Series™ is the original ‘stadium-style’ racing circuit designed for spectators, delivering high-performance action close to shore. Attracting some of the worlds very best sailors racing 40-feet multihulls on short courses, the global circuit spans the Middle East, Asia, South America and Europe.”

Our gorgeous and magnificent Marina Bay Singapore is truly a “stadium-style” racing circuit for the competition boats, sailors and spectators. Enclosed in a 600m by 300m racing circuit surrounded by many different types of buildings, it was a great spectacle to watch the boats sailing pretty close to the sides of the Marina Bay. Due to day job commitments, I was only able to cover the Extreme Sailing Series 2015 Act 1 – Singapore on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th February. The weather was great; it was hot and sunny, with strong winds blowing. It was pretty good for the sailors and spectators alike, to watch the Extreme Sailing Series competition.

With experiences gained over the past 2 years of Extreme Sailing Series in Singapore, I managed to photograph the 40-feet multihulls in action from 6 different spots around Marina Bay, providing me with more different perspectives and views of the Extreme Sailing Series in high-octane action on the waters of Marina Bay Singapore! The spectators were able to view the competition not too far away from the Bay sides and they were able to watch how the sailors adapt and react to different sailing conditions and situations on the boats!

IMG_2905

The winds were tricky, shifty and gusty at times, ranging from 15 knots to 21 knots! Spectators watching from different locations of Marina Bay Singapore were at times given some exciting and heart pumping moments when the boats went all the way out, catching the strong winds pushing them. There was a great sporting action moment when 4 boats raced to the buoy pretty close together and making a U-turn there!

On the 4th day of the Extreme Sailing Series 2015 Act 1 – Singapore, the spectators were treated to a nail biting finish by Red Bull Sailing Team to be crowned champions in Singapore for Act 1 – Singapore. With some competition scoring points advantage coming into Day 4 over SAP Extreme Sailing Team, the Red Bull Sailing Team held their nerve to overcome an onslaught by the SAP Extreme Sailing Team in the final race to beat them by just five points! This was definitely a very close fight to the finishing line and the bragging rights to be called champions in Singapore for Extreme Sailing Series 2015 Act 1!

What is Extreme Sailing all about?

“The Extreme Sailing Series™ is a unique concept, pitting some of the best professional sailing teams in the world against each other on identical Extreme 40 catamarans, on close to shore, challenging and tactical courses, to provide spectacular, stadium-style entertainment for the public. The Stadium Sailing format created and developed by the Series has been revolutionary for the sport. It has brought the boats and action to the public like never before, putting guests at the heart of the battle with the unique ‘Guest Sailor’ spot and dramatically increasing the pace on the water.”

Indeed, right in heart of the Marina Bay area, the Marina Reservoir is definitely the perfect location for the Extreme Sailing Series and I was there to watch, enjoy, photograph and write about the Aberdeen Extreme Sailing Series in Singapore. Guests and spectators were treated to 3 days of extreme sailing sporting action around the Marina Bay, with some vantage views from Marina Bay Sands, Merlion Park and the best location would probably be the Marina Promontory whereby the Extreme Sailing boats would sail as close to the side as possible, where the events village and VIP hospitality are located. I took the opportunity to walk around the Marina Bay area, took photographs from One Fullerton, Esplanade Bridge, Marina Bay Sands and Marina Promontory for my Extreme Sailing Series collection. You can find them here on my Flickr collection!

The hosts/commentators on the ground were awesome in sharing their knowledge of the Extreme Sailing Series, the rules, tactics employed by the various captains, sailing routes taken by the Extreme Sailing boats. This was especially helpful for the spectators who were there to watch the Extreme Sailing Series whom were not too sure on the rules and regulations of the Extreme Sailing Series. At various locations, I would try to capture different boats in action when they are turning into the wind and getting a good sail towards the finishing line. The tricky wind conditions around the Marina Bay posed a challenge to all the various boats captains to plan the right tactics and make the right call in each round of sailing. It’s a test of the captain’s nerve of steel, patience and a cool head to make the right call in Singapore’s tropical heat and humidity.

With Singapore’s Marina Bay hosting the Extreme Sailing Series, this would definitely help and boost Singapore’s sailing in many ways and getting more people interested in sailing activities. This was also helped by fringe events happening in Marina Bay before the Extreme Sailing Series competition from 1500hrs to 1800hrs from Friday to Sunday. It was great to see kids involved and participating in sailing activities at Marina Bay. More sailing opportunities would be available at Marina Bay in the future with regular sailing opportunities/lessons in the Marina Bay (do check out the website Marina Bay Sailing for more details)

Extreme Sailing Series coming to Singapore definitely puts us on the world map as a sporting hub with different sporting events coming over here.  Looking ahead, we hope to see more international sporting events making a stopover in Singapore and we hoped to welcome back Extreme Sailing Series again to Singapore in the heart of Marina Bay!
