Canon Celebrates 90m EOS series cameras and 130m EF lenses

On 17th October 2017, Canon, a global leader in photographic and digital imaging solutions, celebrates two huge production milestones internationally, 90 million EOS series cameras on September 20th and 130 million EF lenses on October 12th. With these two major production milestones, Canon demonstrated their branding and status as a global leader in the photography and digital imaging solutions market.

I have been using Canon EOS series cameras and EF lenses for a period of time, starting from the Canon EOS 300D, one of the cameras that made a significant impact for the photography market around the world (and I was part of it). Over the years, moving from Canon EOS 300D to EOS 30D, EOS 1D Mark III, EOS 70D and now EOS 1DX.

Currently, I have the Canon EOS 1DX and EOS 1D Mark III, with the following EF lenses line-up, EF 17-40mm f/4 L USM, EF 24-70mm f/4 L IS USM, EF 100mm Macro f/2.8 L IS USM, EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L IS USM and EF 300mm f/2.8 L USM. I still have plans to upgrade and also add a few more EF lenses down the road, along with plans to upgrade or add Canon EOS cameras. The milestone 90 million EOS series camera was the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, that I reviewed recently, a DSLR camera that I really like a lot.

My photography skills/knowledge grew a lot (and the most) with my Canon photography cameras, lenses and accessories over the past 13 years and still counting (starting from Canon EOS 300D in 2004). My photography journey and adventures with Canon EOS series cameras and EF lenses had been a very fun, exciting, enriching and great learning.

Canon has always live up to their slogan “Delighting You Always” and I will never forget hearing about the story behind this slogan from my visit to Canon EXPO 2016 Shanghai. Indeed, they have and I am a part of this slogan!

Let me bring you through the information and details of Canon’s two major production milestones – 90million EOS series cameras and 130million EF lenses :

Press Release 17th October 2017

Canon Inc. announced today that the Company has reached two major production milestones—a cumulative total of 90 million silver halide (film) and interchangeable-lens cameras on September 20 and 130 million[1] EF-series interchangeable lenses on October 12. An EOS 5D Mark IV was the 90 millionth EOS Series camera produced, while an EF16-35mm f/2.8L III USM became the Company’s 130 millionth EF-series interchangeable lens produced.

Canon’s EOS system debuted alongside the EF series of interchangeable lenses in March 1987 as the world’s first fully-electronic mount system for silver halide AF SLR cameras. Over the years, both product lines have continued to expand, gaining support among users ranging from first-time users to professionals. Production accelerated in the early 2000’s with the spread of digital SLR cameras. What’s more, Canon’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 14 consecutive years since 2003.[2]

Since its conception, the EOS series has continued to develop revolutionary technologies under the series concept of “speed and comfort.” With the advent of the digital age, the concept was expanded to include “high image quality.” Canon has since developed in-house every key device—CMOS sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses—employed in the EOS series. Particularly noteworthy are the Company’s EF lenses, which lead the industry in sales and feature such world-first[3] innovations as the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS) technology and a multilayered diffractive optical (DO) element.

Canon will continue to strengthen and expand the EOS series and EF lens lineups by refining its imaging technologies, centered on optics, and by striving to combine stills, video and network technologies. The Company will also continue its pursuit of manufacturing products that are both attractive and reliable, while also contributing to expanding the photographic and video imaging culture.

EOS Series

The EOS series of interchangeable-lens cameras began with the EOS 650 SLR camera, released in Japan in March 1987, that not only featured the world’s first electronic lens mounting system, but also fully digitized communication between the camera body and lens to realize a new generation of autofocus technology.

As silver halide cameras boomed, Canon launched several models covering a wide range of user needs, including the EOS-1 in Japan in 1989, aimed at professionals, and the EOS Kiss (EOS Rebel XS or EOS 500 in other regions) in Japan in 1993, which achieved a compact, lightweight design and greatly expanded Canon’s user base. Then in 2003, during the early years of the digital camera age, the Company released in Japan the groundbreaking EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D Digital in other regions), an entry-level digital SLR camera that realized a compact, lightweight body at an affordable price. This move would trigger a massive expansion of the camera market, with Canon claiming the overwhelming lead in market share that same year. With the later release of the EOS-1D Series for professionals and the EOS 5D series, which helped popularize video capture using SLR cameras, Canon has continued to release epoch-making products that have enabled the Company to maintain the No. 1 share of the global interchangeable-lens digital camera market for 14 consecutive years from 2003 to 2016.

EF Lenses

Since the release of the first EF lens, launched alongside the EOS series in 1987, Canon has produced such EF lenses featuring world-first technologies as the EF75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM with IS in Japan in 1995, the EF400mm f/4 DO IS USM with a DO lens in Japan in 2001 and the EF24mm f/1.4L II USM, treated with highly antireflective Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) in Japan in 2008. What’s more, in 2015 Canon released in Japan the EF11-24mm f/4L USM, the world’s first[1] ultra-wide-angle zoom lens to achieve an 11 mm focal length.

** From my archives, Year 2012 **

Today, Canon boasts 93 lenses[2] in its rich EF lens lineup that comprises such lenses as an ultra-wide-angle 8 mm focal length lens, an 800 mm focal length super-telephoto lens and EF Cinema Series lenses for video production. With a wide selection of lenses for every purpose including zoom lenses, IS-equipped lenses, fast-aperture lenses, macro lenses and even the TS-E tilt-shift lenses, Canon is well-positioned to meet the needs of various users.

Canon introduced PowerShot G1 X Mark III

Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III, the latest compact camera by Canon to enter the market. This compact camera is packed with features from the Canon DSLR camera family, employing Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF and the APS-C sized CMOS sensor inside the Canon PowerShot  G1 X Mark III.

Based on these two features alone, I am pretty impressed with the latest Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III compact camera and the decision by Canon to deploy such resources from their DSLR series into their compact camera series. This move would make their compact cameras to move towards a much higher end compact camera models from Canon.

For those who have been following the photography and technology fields, you would know about the impacts of smartphone photography on compact cameras in the world over the past few years. Reflecting back on my article when I attended Canon EXPO 2016 Shanghai, my analysis was that Canon has a commitment to design and manufacture high end compact cameras. The announcement of the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III is the testimonial to that.

If the opportunity arises, I would take the Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III for a short review period and I would be able to share my photographs, thoughts, views and experiences with this Canon compact camera.

The Canon PowerShot G1 X Mark III is coming soon, let me first share with you information and pictures of this powerful compact camera by Canon from the press release information below:

Press Release 16th October 2017

Canon today announced the launch of PowerShot G1 X Mark III, the newest addition to its range of compact cameras. The first Canon compact camera equipped with Dual Pixel CMOS AF and an APS-C sized CMOS sensor, the largest imaging sensor in its compact camera lineup, this latest addition marks a new technology milestone.

Equipped with DIGIC 7 image processor, the PowerShot G1 X Mark III raises the bar in imaging technology. Designed with a 24-72mm (35mm film equivalent) f/2.8– f/5.6 IS lens with 3x optical zoom, the camera is capable of capturing a wide range of subjects and achieving shallow depth of field. Featuring a vari-angle touch panel packed in a durable and compact body, the PowerShot G1 X Mark III also boasts of a high resolution EVF (Electronic View Finder) of 2.36 million dots. Weighing approximately 399g (CIPA compliant) the PowerShot G1 X Mark III is the perfect companion for adventure seekers and underwater photographers alike.

“The combination of an APS-C sized imaging sensor used in DSLR and Dual Pixel CMOS AF premieres for the first time in the PowerShot G1 X Mark III, to challenge the status quo of compact cameras,” said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore. “This sharp shooter is set to empower users with higher image quality and unprecedented high-speed AF packed in a compact and lightweight frame, making it an incredibly versatile all-rounded camera to capture your adventure highlights wherever you go, from travel to underwater photography.”

Redefining Image Quality with Cutting Edge Technology

The latest DIGIC 7 image processor underpins various enhancements on the PowerShot G1 X Mark III to deliver on-point performance in speed and image quality. With the built-in noise reduction technology, users enjoy enriched image clarity with suppressed noise, even at high ISO speeds, making the PowerShot G1 X Mark III ideal for outdoor shots or night scenes.

Enhanced with an improved subject tracking performance, the sharp shooter ensures that fast actions and movements can be captured with stunning speed and ease. When tracking a moving subject, the camera is able to detect changes in its size and orientation, regardless of other subjects in the background. Additionally, subjects that blend in with the background or have low colour saturation can be easily identified with the high-precision subject detection feature, even under low-light conditions.

With Dual Sensing IS, taking pictures or capturing stable video footages on the move will be a cinch. An algorithm was developed to minimize blurring and thus achieving image stabilization with high precision, even with significant camera shake due to body movements.

The Auto Lighting Optimiser function corrects dark areas for clearer contrast and high image clarity in backlit conditions. When shooting with small apertures, the high processing performance on the DIGIC 7 image processor ensures that diffraction is suppressed to achieve image clarity.

A new panoramic feature will delight photographers with the ease of capturing captivating wide-angle panoramic shots by a simple horizontal or vertical swivel of the camera. This also allows photographers to have better resolution images; larger and more detailed prints, along with more cropping ability in post-processing.

Precision Focus with Dual Pixel CMOS AF

A first in a Canon compact camera, the PowerShot G1 X Mark III is equipped with the Canon-developed Dual Pixel CMOS AF, allowing the camera to achieve unparalleled high-speed AF. With an estimated 24.2 million pixels functioning as phase difference sensors, users enjoy fast and smooth focus, be it when capturing moments or shooting movies. Even in dimly-lit conditions, high precision and superior quality are also achieved.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark III is capable of attaining continuous shooting speed of 7fps during AF tracking and 9fps during AF fixed. With its intuitive Touch & Drag AF function, users will be able to touch and shift the focus points while looking through the electronic viewfinder, which makes capturing that prized moment much easier. This feature is especially useful as it enables faster and more precise focusing in various scenarios, such as capturing images of moving children or animals, or keeping up with subjects when shooting movies.

Users can challenge their creativity with PowerShot G1 X Mark III’s movie shooting function, which captures a wide range of video expressions at a smooth frame rate of 60p in Full HD. Powered by Dual Pixel CMOS AF and coupled with features like the touch panel, and built-in stereo microphone, users can shoot movies like a professional. The camera’s intelligent tracking function ensures sharp footage, even when both the user and the subject are moving.

Rediscover Photography with Premium Features

Despite housing a larger sensor and a built-in Electronic Viewfinder (EVF), the PowerShot G1 X Mark III stays incredibly compact. In fact, it is approximately 27% (CIPA guideline) lighter compared to its predecessor – PowerShot G1 X Mark II, with a form factor comparable to the PowerShot G5 X.

Fitted with a 2.36 million dot OLED screen, photographers will appreciate a better representation of the image reflected by the camera sensor. Users can enjoy a high level of clarity right to the edges of the screen, and at the same time, not worry about interference from glare. With its vari-angle LCD touch screen, users can experiment with different angles by flipping the screen horizontally and tilting the screen vertically, which can come in handy when taking selfies.

With Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, users can easily pair the PowerShot G1 X Mark III to their smart devices for ease of sharing images and videos on their social media platforms. The Canon Camera Connect app also allows users to have real-time control of camera settings. Additionally, the built-in Bluetooth low energy technology maintains constant connection to a compatible smart device at low power consumption. With this constant connection, users can view images and start remote capture from the camera even when in Auto Power Off mode.

Paired with a compatible Canon underwater casing (WP-DC56), users are able to capture the intrigue of the underwater world up to a depth of 40 metres in high clarity. The PowerShot G1 X Mark III makes an excellent companion on diving trips as it is equipped with a number of features for underwater photography and movie shooting. Users can correct white balance using the underwater scene mode, with the effects matching that of a commercially available colour-compensating filter. They can further fine tune this balance or even customize their own white balance setting. With underwater macro shooting available, users can now take up close shots of the fascinating marine life.

Built for versatile use and durability, the camera body is dust and drip-proof for adequate protection from moisture and dust.

Celebration of Photography Exhibition by ION Art and Leica Galerie Singapore

ION Orchard is celebrating their 8th Anniversary this year and in conjunction with this celebration, ION Art is proud to present Celebration of Photography Exhibition, in partnership with Leica Galerie Singapore. This is the fourth edition of the annual ION Art Photography Series and I remembered visiting ION Art for a photography exhibitio by fellow photographer friend, Aik Beng Chia.

For this particular Celebration of Photography Exhibition, they will feature eight collections of photography works by eight oustanding and talented Singapore-based photographers, each of them specialist in their own photography fields and genres. During the media session on the morning of Friday 6th October 2017, I had a short tour of this amazing Celebration of Photography Exhibition with a short sharing and presentation by each photographer, on their themes, thoughts and synposis behind their photography works on display.

From photography genres, portrait, architecture, lifestyle, travel, documentary, sports and street photography, visitors can view the various photography works by the eight Singapore-based photographers, from all walks of life. When I walked through the various photography works on display, they were more than just excellent and amazing, they each tell a story behind the photograph, through the unique and special vision of each photographer.

Being a photographer myself, taking on both commercial photography work as a small business and personal photography, each and every of the eight photographers works resonates something with me, in my heart, mind and soul. Viewing photography exhibitions of such high standards and quality, does give me the encouragement to rekindle my passion for my personal photography projects when commercial photography takes a huge part away from it. This photography exhibition was also an excellent opportunity to view the quality of Leica cameras and lenses, shot entirely from the legendary Leica M series, professional systems such as the Leica S and SL, to versatile and compact cameras such as the Leica Q, TL2 and Sofort.

Now, let me introduce to you the eight photographer featured in this exhibition:

OPPO R11 Dual Lens Smartphone Review

The OPPO R11 was launched not long ago in July 2017, their current flagship model in their line up. At their launch event, I did manage to get hold of the OPPO R11 for a very short time and tried it out.

Once a review unit was made available, I had the OPPO R11 for two weeks to test it out, putting their dual lens smartphone camera to the test. Their ColorOS 3.1 based on Android 7.1, is easy to use, it has a friendly user interface and it is quite similar to the Apple iOS layout. Overall, smartphone users who decide to choose the OPPO R11 smartphone should be able to adapt pretty quickly.

Before I proceed to write and share on the dual lens smartphone camera review, let me refresh on the OPPO R11 technical specifications

What are some of my thoughts, views, notes and observations during my review on the OPPO R11 dual lens smartphone camera review? Let me bring you through my experiences with the OPPO R11 dual lens camera smartphone, the photographs that I took with it and videos on my YouTube channel.

Observations, Notes and Views

  • In expert mode, you can zoom in from 1x to 10x, this is a very interesting and very useful feature to have. With the high megapixels, this allows the camera to push up to 10x, although I personally won’t use up to 10x zoom.
  • There are two lenses that you can use in expert mode, they are the 16M (f/1.7) + 20M (f/2.6).
  • In video mode, they have a feature to record 10s short video, this would come in handy for social media usage.
  • 4K video output is good when viewed on my laptop
  • Sharp and clear photographs
  • At high ISO, the noise level is visible and photographs can be grainy (a challenge for all smartphones in my personal opinion)
  • In expert mode, users can’t shoot in mono filter
  • Monochrome photos straight out from OPPO R11 is a mix of hit and miss for me, sometimes I like the final photo, sometimes I don’t.

The OPPO R11 dual lens camera smartphone may not seem to be packed with that many features that you can see in some other smartphone models in the market, that does not mean that they are not as good. From my review and experiences, the OPPO R11 does have some strong features that stand out during the time when I was reviewing it.

The portrait feature, coupled with the high megapixels sensors in the OPPO R11, making it one of their strong features and key selling point. This would be most welcomed by those who love to take portraits or have their portraits being taken.

Overall, the OPPO R11 dual lens camera smartphone may not have the features that professional photographers / serious photography enthusiasts desire, nevertheless, they are still able to produce pretty nice and good quality photos from the OPPO R11 especially for those who love portraits and selfies. The 4K video quality output is good, another feature that I like, from the OPPO R11 dual lens camera smartphone.

I woud like to thank OPPO Singapore and MSL Group for the opportunity to review the OPPO R11 dual lens camera smartphone.

Happy Mid-Autumn Festival 2017!

A festival that always attracts the whole family with children, for a fun time of family gathering and fun together. Mid-Autumn Festival has always been an important festival for the Chinese community around the world, an occasion for celebration on the Chinese Lunar Calendar, the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, which is today, 4th October 2017.

On the weekend 30th September and 1st October 2017, I visited Wan Qing Yuan, Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall for an evening of Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival 2017 Celebrations (秋月明夜亮晚晴). There were a number of fun activities organised for the weekend, great for families and children, do check out some of their photographs uploaded on their Facebook Page.

I visited 晚晴园 on 30th October for Mid-Autumn Festival 2017 celebrations. It was great to see families with children coming down for family bonding time and having fun together. The lanterns were a big attraction for the children and also for the parents too, they are childhood memories for the adults too! With the outdoor booths around the lawn area, fun activities and food for the visitors, beside visiting the museum and other activities taking place inside Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall.

The evening concert was great; the LED Dragon Dance got everybody excited as they moved around the crowds, getting up close and personal with them. That was followed by live music performances on the stage, entertaining and captivating the visitors celebrating Mid-Autumn Festival 2017 at 晚晴园, some of the memorable scenes for me were the cute and enthusiastic young children sitting right in front of the stage, watching, cheering and recording videos of the live music performances on stage, spreading great joy and love to the different performers. Let me share some of my memories from Wan Qing Mid-Autumn Festival 2017!

Today is Mid-Autmn Festival 2017! Wishing everybody a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival 2017! Have a great time of fun and bonding with your family during this festival!

Ballantine’s launched 15 years old Single Malt Series

Scotch whisky lovers alert! Ballantine’s, one of the world’s renowned Scotch whisky, recently launched their first ever 15 years old single malt series. For those who have been following my articles here on my portal/blog and my Instagram, you would have seen my whisky drinking adventures with Nikka, Balvenie and Ballantine’s, as well as my family secret collection of whisky over the past few decades.

A recent news release by Media Outreach got my attention, Ballantine’s launched their first ever 15 years old single malt series in Taipei, Taiwan. From the press release, I also learned that Taiwan is the 4th largest whisky market by value and the most vibrant Single Malt market in the world. With this factor, Taiwan is the first country  to officially launch the Ballantine’s Single Malt Series.

I am going to share more information provided by them on their first ever 15 years old single malt series Scotch whisky.  I hope to have the opportunity to taste them here in Singapore and I would love to visit whisky distilleries in Scotland when the opportunity arises.

Let me share the key information and details of Ballantine’s first ever 15 years old single malt series:

For the first time in its 190-year history, Ballantine’s has unveiled three outstanding 15 years old Single Malts, each unique in flavour and from three of its signature distilleries: Glenburgie, Miltonduff and Glentauchers.

This innovative move sees Ballantine’s look to meet the growing demand for Single Malts and allow a new generation of discerning drinkers to discover the unique flavours of three of the signature malts from the heart of Ballantine’s.

Fusing the traditional and the modern, each Single Malt celebrates nearly two centuries of heritage and tradition in the beautiful and historic Speyside region of Scotland — whilst showcasing founder George Ballantine’s need to do things differently.    The packaging itself is an outward expression of this fusion, taking inspiration from Scotland, the home of the brand and showcasing the natural stone of each of its distilleries.

Sandy Hyslop, the fifth Master Blender for Ballantine’s, worked with his talented team to craft the first ever Single Malt Series, he comments: “This is a truly exciting time for Ballantine’s. Since 1827, Ballantine’s has been creating award-winning whiskies, and the Single Malt series is a bold expression of both Ballantine’s heritage and sense of innovation within the world of whisky.

“Each of these 15 years old Single Malts has been made with the same craft, care and authenticity that goes into every bottle of Ballantine’s, whilst pushing the boundaries of what is currently on the market today. I am certain that whisky drinkers, connoisseurs and collectors alike will enjoy these new whiskies.”

The Glenburgie Single Malt

  • Nose: Perfectly balanced with aromas of sweet soft red apples and blackcurrant. Allied with this is wonderful honeycomb candy sweetness.
  • Taste: Full and creamy with a velvety smooth texture (honey). This whisky is bursting with fruity sweet orange flavours.
  • Finish: Very long, sweet and round.

The Miltonduff Single Malt

  • Nose: Rich fruity and sweet. Flavours of peaches in syrup, juicy sweet orange and creamy soft toffee with a hint of toasted almonds.
  • Taste: Sweet scented floral flavours. Extremely smooth with milk chocolate flavours and hints of cinnamon spice, cloves and liquorice root in the background.
  • Finish: Very long, warm and sweet.

The Glentauchers Single Malt

  • Nose: Bursting with sweet citrus fruit flavours (tangerine and sweet clementine) with hazelnut notes and a hint of delicate floral heather coming through the background.
  • Taste: Coats the mouth with smooth, soft berry flavours of raspberry and blackcurrant, combined with a tantalising taster of barley sugar sweets.
  • Finish: Incredibly long and luscious.
