Celebrating 10 magical years of Singapore Night Festival

In three weeks time, starting on the 18th August 2017. An iconic night festival that was born 10 years ago in 2008 at the National Museum of Singapore grounds, is going to celebrate her milestone of 10 magical years, of the Singapore Night Festival.

I was there for the maiden Singapore Night Festival in the year 2008 with Studio Festi from Italy performing in front of the lawn grounds of the National Museum of Singapore. The road was closed and the visitors were able to watch them perform from a distance. I still can’t forget those memories, even though I captured them down through my photographs.

This also marked the start of my own personal journey with the Singapore Night Festival, faithfully and consistently, for the next 9 years from 2008, photographing, documenting and writing about my stories on the Singapore Night Festival. I had seen them grown, expanded and transformed over the past 9 years, they had become more popular, well-known locally and internationally. The visitorship increased significantly over the years gone by since her maiden debut in 2008, the shows, performances, artistic displays increased as well over the past 9 years, from the local artists anchoring past editions, engaging the local communities and businesses in the Bras Basah Bugis precinct.

At a recent introduction media conference at the National Museum of Singapore, we were given an introduction and briefing on the upcoming 10th edition of the Singapore Night Festival. For this year’s 10the edition, there is stellar line up, with a strong line up of local artists that have anchored past editions of the Singapore Night Festival. Our ten local homecoming artists were introduced to the guests present at the introduction media conference, after speeches by Angelita Teo, Festival Director and Christie Chua, Creative Director of the Festival. Listening to each of their stories relating to their Singapore Night Festival performance, it was very heartwarming to hear from them, how it had changed and impacted them, by being part of Singapore Night Festival.

Here is the list of the 10 homecoming artists for Singapore Night Festival 2017!

No. Artist Name of Group Title of Act / Artwork
1 Syed Ahmad Bloco Singapura Armenian Street Carnival Bloc
2 Danny Loong Timbre Music (presenting New Stream Brass Band) New Stream Bass Band
3 Alvin Oon Peranakan Sayang Peranakan Party
4 Daphne Huang and Ponnamma Devaiah Flamenco Sin Fronteras, Nawaz & Friends Journey of Time
5 Roch Ong and Teng Jun Yong ZingO Lunisolar Vibes
6 Firhmann Salim Instigator Afrobeat Orchestra HOMEMADE MAS1A + Instigator Afrobeat Orchestra
7 Greg Ho Grapple Max Dojo Night Festival Showdown
8 Jamie Yeo The Brass Barre The Art of Pole
9 Johari Kazura Starlight Alchemy The Flower of Life and The Infinite Self
10 Ning Cai Mind Magic Mistress Pain/Pleasure

I still can remember the various performances by our strong local artists that anchored the past editions of Singapore Night Festival. They stood out, tall and proud, recognised by the local community in Singapore and also gain international recognition too!

Some of our strong local artists, I can still remember, very clearly, on how they made an impact and significance to the Singapore Night Festival over the past 9 years. Here are some of my favourite memories from them:

Over the past few years, Bloco Singapura, Timbre Music and Peranakan Sayang turning the Armenian Street into one lively and exciting street music party festival, singing, dancing and playing their music instruments, faithfully and consistently, having fun, performing, participating and interacting with the wonderful crowds on Armenian Street. It was truly a street festival party!

In 2015, Starlight Alchemy performance drew a huge crowds to watch them. I had been following Starlight Alchemy years back and it was really great to see them performing on the bigger stage at Singapore Night Festival!

In 2014, ZingO, performing together with William Close with his Earth Harp Collective at the Front Lawn of the National Museum of Singapore. A fusion performance of East meets West, transforming the whole of National Museum of Singapore into something very special and unique. I will never forget this performance, our local artist troupe performing together with an international artist troupe. Oh yes, I can’t forget the wrestling action by Grapple Max Dojo at Armenian Street, if you grew up watch WWF wrestling action on tv, this would interest you!

In 2013, Ning Cai (then known as Magic Babe Ning) produced a nail-biting magic performance, attempting an underwater escape from the water vault. I didn’t manage to photograph her other magic act due to a clash of my schedule and I missed the other magic performance.

As we start to count down towards 18th August 2017, to mark the start of the 10th edition of Singapore Night Festival, follow me through my photographs and stories on my Instagram, Twitter, Facebook Page, Flickr and my website for the 10the edition of Singapore Night Festival 2017. This is going to be my 10th year covering Singapore Night Festival, this is also a personal milestone for me too, 10 consecutive years of Singapore Night Festival coverage, documentation and photography.

In a space of two weeks since the official launch on 13th July 2017, this iconic and newly locally inspired burger by McDonald’s Singapore, the “Nasi Lemak” burger took Singapore by storm and it was sold out.  This was an overwhelming response and it was pretty unbelievable! I was glad that I had the opportunity to taste the “Nasi Lemak” burger prior to the official launch of the “Nasi Lemak” burger.

Initially, I was skeptical of the “Nasi Lemak” burger when I heard of the name. However, when I took a bite and tasted it, I was swayed across and I really liked it! I thought I would still have the chance to eat the “Nasi Lemak” burger again, yet I would never realise that it was sold out that fast, in two weeks!

McDonald’s Singapore thanks Singaporeans for their overwhelming support of its “Nasi Lemak” burger and the locally inspired menu offerings.

“Singaporeans’ overwhelming support for our “Nasi Lemak” Burger and other locally-inspired menu offerings have far exceeded our wildest imagination. And we will certainly consider suggestions to bring it back sometime in the future,” said Agatha Yap, Senior Director of Marketing, Menu and Digital Innovation, McDonald’s Singapore.

“The success of our locally-inspired menu attests to Singaporeans’ love for local flavours with a modern twist, and is also a result of our menu innovation efforts. We will continue to evolve and innovate our menu, staying close to local and international food trends, and strive to delight our customers with tantalising new tastes on top of their favourite McDonald’s core classics,” she added.

Emirates Singapore Derby 2017

A fun Sunday afternoon, accompanied by beautiful fashion, great food and ambience, time well spent with friends at the Singapore Turf Club during the 22nd Emirates Singapore Derby on 9th July 2017. It was a great time, everyone of us were dressed, elegant dress worn by the ladies and smart looking suits for us gentlemen.

Prior to the Emirates Singapore Derby 2017, I visited their roadshow at Kallang Wave Mall atrium on 24th June, a fun and interactive roadshow with fun activities for adults as well as for young children, one of them was the art and craft activity that the children can learn about racing colours! It was fun to see the children using their creativity to produce colourful racing colours. There were also information boards to share on horse racing, history, culture and the corporate social responsibility activities conducted by the Singapore Turf Club for various local Singapore communities and organisations.

The weather was great, nice sky, pretty cloud formations over the Singapore Turf Club horizon, a good day to be at the race tracks and enjoy the carnival and festivities of the Emirates Singapore Derby 2017. The hospitality and service at the Emirates Singapore Derby were great, we had a fun and enjoyable time at the marquee, with food, drinks, friendship, networking and of course, the sporting action on the race tracks.

This wasn’t just about a racing carnival, it’s more than that! The Emirates Singapore Derby was a reminiscent of my days in Australia when I was studying there, attending the major racing carnivals whenever I am able to, learning much more about the history, culture, sports and festivities of a racing carnival. In between the races on Emirates Singapore Derby, besides enjoying the delicious food spread and drinks, listening to the live band performing, we had a fun time chatting and mingling among us. Our pretty lady friends were busy taking photos with fellow guests dressed beautifully while we gentlemen were the ones taking photos for our well dressed friends and chatting away.

Prior to the start of any races, we would go outside to the open air marquee and watched the sports racing action on the tracks, cheering them on when they raced past us at the marquee. After the race was completed, some of us would stay around and take photos with the grandstand and the race track behind them. Returning back to the marquee after each race, we continued with the fun, food and drinks, chatting and networking.

cof

The highlight was Race 9 Emirates Singapore Derby, we made our way into the main grandstand building, visiting the parade ring to view the horses getting ready for the main race of Emirates Singapore Derby 2017, along with the owners, guests and trainer. An eye opener and a close up experience inside the parade ring, watching the horses going through their paces and warm up before the race jockeys entering into the parade ring,

Soon, the bugle was sounded and the horses with their jockeys were “Call to the Post”, making their way out to the race track. We waited patiently behind for all the race horses with their jockeys to leave the parade ring and into the race track before the owners, trainer and guests made their way to the front, getting ready to watch the main race, the key highlight race of the Emirates Singapore Derby 2017.

As they lined up into their starting gates, everybody was patiently and eagerly waiting for them to start the race. Once all the competitors were lined up inside the starting gate, in the blink of an eye, the race was on! This was a high octane race, full of adrenaline and excitement! When the racers made the turn for the final home stretch, they lifted their paces and burst for the finishing line, everybody wanting to be the champion for this race! As they made a final dash to the finishing line, the visitors at the Emirates Singapore Derby cheered and encouraged them on from the sidelines!

With the main race concluded, the jubilant owner and trainer were very excited and happy, waiting for their winning horse and jockey to return. While waiting for the prize presentation to formally began, they can be spotted giving media interviews. Soon after, the winning jockey joined the jubilant owner and trainer, joining them on stage for the formal prize presentation.

The main race of Emirates Singapore Derby 2017 was over and that also marked the end of the racing carnival and festivities for us, as we bade goodbye to Singapore Turf Club, for a wonderful and fun afternoon of hospitality, food, drinks and sporting action on the race tracks, at the 22nd Emirates Singapore Derby. Thank you Singapore Turf Club for the invitation to the 22nd Emirates Singapore Derby and showering us with your warm hospitality.

Journey with me along with the Huawei P10 Plus

The Huawei P10 and P10 Plus were recently announced a few months back in March/April 2017. This was the smartphone that I was secretly looking forward to, after I saw the Huawei Mate 9 (with the new OS, cameras and build quality) that was launched before the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus announcement. One of the reasons why I was so secretly excited was because I am a Huawei P9 owner, owning it after I had the opportunity to review this smartphone packed with solid and amazing dual lens camera.

I was very impressed with the quality, colours and details of the Huawei P9 dual lens camera smartphone. After finishing my Huawei P9 review, I wrote two review articles (a tech enthusiast review and the other article is on the Huawei P9 dual lens camera review), along with two photographs collection on my Flickr (One album for monochrome photos shot with the Huawei P9 only and the album for all photos with the Huawei P9).

A few days back, I finally got a golden and wonderful opportunity to get hold of the Huawei P10 Plus and review it! Upon unboxing and switching it on, there was a very familiar feel to it, partly because I am used to the Huawei smartphone OS and its dual lens camera. At the back of my mind, I am able to quickly identify the key differences and improvements between my Huawei P9 and Huawei P10 Plus. The Leica Summilux-H 1:1.8/27 ASPH dual lens on the Huawei P10 Plus, makes it standout from the rest of the smartphone competitors, the sharpness, clarity and colours.

I also managed to get hold of another smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S8+, for my own comparison with the Huawei P10 Plus, I might add in other smartphones inside too for comparison in my review article. While testing out the capabilities of the Huawei P10 Plus along with the Samsung Galaxy S8+, I had some initial and immediate views on them. I have also noted that the P10 Plus has dual lens versus Galaxy S8+ has single lens and I would be mindful of this point in my review article.

Take a look at some of the photos shot with Huawei P10 Plus and Samsung Galaxy S8+:

Both smartphones process their photographs differently, personally for me, I prefer the Huawei P10 Plus because of its colours, authenticity and accuracy to the the scenes/subjects that I shot. The photos shot with the Huawei P10 Plus are closer to my DSLR photography and I can closely relate to the set of photos taken.

Take a look at the photos shot in the night, in very dim lighting conditions:

With particular reference to the photos shot in the night, comparing the photos side by side, the Galaxy S8+ photo looks very nice, bright and colourful, while the P10 Plus doesn’t look as “nice”. Both photos are straight off from the smartphone cameras with no further editing anywhere else. The truth is that the Huawei P10 Plus camera processing and output is authentic and original, as close to the actual scene, as a photographer would say “WYSIWYG – What You See Is What You Get”. For the Galaxy S8+, the processing is a a little bit “strong” and “powerful” for my liking and how I conduct my photography.

There will be users in the market that prefers the output from the Galaxy S8+, there will also be users who prefer the authenticity and accuracy of the Huawei P10 Plus.

Personally, I prefer the the authenticity and accuracy of the Huawei P10 Plus, not just because I own a Huawei P9, it’s also how I approach my photography on a leisure and commercial basis. I am not a supporter of heavy editing in photography that goes against the truth and authenticity of the scenes and surroundings. I only do the necessary light touch editing (and sometimes suitable film filters) to my photographs that I shoot. That is also probably why I am not a hipster and fanciful Instagrammer.

Although I am reviewing the Huawei P10 Plus (and, yes, I own a Huawei P9) and doing my own comparisons with other smartphones, this does not mean that they are lousy smartphones, it’s just that based on my style, photography workflow and preferences, the Huawei P10 Plus is more suitable (and I really like it) for me.

In the coming weeks, I am going to share and upload my photographs on Instagram and Facebook Page shot with the Huawei P10 Plus, do keep a look out for my stories, photos, exploration and journeys with the Huawei P10 Plus.

Monochrome architecture photos shot with the Huawei P10 Plus, are something that I am looking forward to. I am also some planning some special themes to go along with this Huawei P10 Plus review – P10 Plus monochrome portraits, daily commute on public transport, abstract monochrome compositions. This is a prelude to my review articles and photographs that I would be sharing at the end of the Huawei P10 Plus review.

mon

For the next few weeks, walk with me, through my eyes, thoughts, views and journeys with the Huawei P10 Plus.

Canon launched Canon EOS 200D

Canon recently launched two DSLRs to their line up, one of them was the Canon EOS 6D Mark II that I shared in an earlier article. The other DSLR camera that Canon launched was the Canon EOS 200D. This is an entry level DSLR camera that is light, compact and trendy for beginners to learn hands on with the EOS 200D.

I reviewed the Canon EOS 100D (the predecessor of the Canon EOS 200D) previously, I had a fun time testing and reviewing the camera, my review article can be found here! While the EOS 200D is designed as an entry level DSLR camera, great for beginners to learn on-the-go photography, the lightweight, compact size and trendy looking DSLR camera makes it very nice and handy for travel photography.

With a number of advanced features found inside the other current Canon DSLR models, along with the vari-angle touch screen LCD monitor, it does make photography learning a lot more fun and easier for users that are starting to learn more about basic photography.

If you are starting basic photography and you would like a basic DSLR to learn while on-the-go, do check out the Canon EOS 200D.

Let me share with you some key information on the Canon EOS 200D from the press release information:

“The EOS 200D redefines the traditional notion of a DSLR with its stylish outlook and ease of use, while delivering superior imaging performance”, said Edwin Teoh, Head of Marketing, Singapore Operations, Canon Singapore. “With its user-friendly pictorial interface and seamless connectivity, users will find it a breeze to navigate through the functions and share the captivating images taken instantly.”

Capturing Moments with Agility and Precision

Powered by advanced imaging technology and features, the EOS 200D will appeal to both non-camera users and aspiring photography enthusiasts. Equipped with a high-resolution 24.2-megapixel APS-C size CMOS sensor, users will be able to achieve crisp pictures with the flexibility of cropping images without compromising on image quality.

With the latest DIGIC 7 image processor, the standard ISO speed reaches 25600. This helps in reducing motion blur caused by slow shutter speeds, which is common especially under low light conditions. Some examples include capturing children at play in the evenings, or shooting an indoor sporting activity.

Users can achieve extremely fast focusing during Live View and movie shooting, with the Canon-developed Dual Pixel CMOS AF. The Live View Servo AF allows users to track the subject constantly and shoot at a continuous shooting speed of up to 3.5 frames per second (fps). A quieter and smoother video footage can also be achieved when paired with a lens with Stepping Motor (STM). Additionally, AF speed can be adjusted to suit more sophisticated shots such as slower focus shifts to create softer effects.

Equipped with a Vari-angle touch screen LCD monitor, the fully articulated screen allows users to experiment with creative image compositions from diverse angles. The combination of Vari-angle LCD monitor and Dual Pixel CMOS AF further enables the EOS 200D to deliver smooth and expressive movies in full HD quality at 60p.

Ergonomic Design and User-Friendly Interface for Intuitive Operation

With the pictorial user interface, beginners to DSLR photography will find it a breeze to navigate through the functions of the EOS 200D. Via the “how-to” tips for smart shooting guide on the graphic user interface, beginners can also easily pick up more skills and tap on the capabilities of the EOS 200D.

With just a single touch on the menu screen, stunning selfies can be achieved. In the Selfie Mode, settings such as background defocus, brightness and smooth skin effect are automatically adjusted to frame the best selfies. Coupled with the Vari-angle touch screen LCD monitor, users will have flexibility to compose their shots from different angles and find it easy to achieve good quality self-portraits.

The compact camera body is designed to provide an enhanced grip to ensure a secure grasp. Additionally, its body is overlaid with a grain-finish for a premium feel. To conform to the smooth outline of the camera body and reduce protrusions, the mode dial now fits seamlessly to the camera’s surface. Additionally, the internal structure of the EOS 200D is also remodeled to achieve the compact and nimble form for better design integration. For example, the circuit board for flash was downsized to keep the weight light.

The EOS 200D comes in two colour options – Trendy White and Sophisticated Silver.

Easy Connectivity and Sharing

With Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity, users can transfer images and videos from EOS 200D to smart devices and upload them onto the Canon Image Gateway, social media platforms and cloud storage. By using the Canon Camera Connect app, users have real-time control of camera settings such as shutter speed, focus selection and self-timer and more. Additionally, it comes with a dedicated Wi-Fi button for hassle-free connection at a single touch.

Additionally, the built-in Bluetooth low energy technology maintains constant connection to a compatible smart device at low power consumption. With this constant connection, users can view images and start remote capture from the camera even when it is in Auto Power Off mode. Smart devices with Bluetooth can wake the camera up, and switch to Wi-Fi for browsing and viewing images or performing remote capture (with Live View).

Users can also use Bluetooth to perform basic remote capture (no Live View), control image playback and slide show when the camera is connected to a TV or projector via smart devices.

Pricing and Availability

The pricing and availability of the Canon EOS 200D will be advised at a later date.
